Scherrer Zinfandel Old and Mature Vines Scherrer Vineyard 2013 - First Bottle

Reviews

93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
From a vineyard planted in 1912, with subsequent plantings in the 1970s and 1980s, the 2013 Zinfandel Old & Mature Vines was aged totally in French oak. A juicy, outrageously delicious Zinfandel, with full-bodied terrific black raspberry and black cherry fruit, pepper, earth and underbrush. Its opulence and lusciousness are pure hedonism at its best. Moreover, the alcohol is relatively tame by Zinfandel standards these days coming in at 14.5%. This should drink nicely for another 7-8 years.
93 Vinous -
The Zinfandel Old & Mature Vines Scherrer Vineyard is once again one of Fred Scherrer's most distinctive wines in 2013. A wine of real character and personality, the 2013 is endowed with superb depth. Leather, smoke, spice, dried herb and tobacco add an attractive savory element.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
DOUBLE 93-pointer! 10% OFF and free shipping on 6! One of California’s GREATS, Scherrer’s bottlings (especially this rare old vines from his own vineyard), are those that aficionados keep to themselves. It’s TOO GOOD, and incredibly well-priced for what you’re getting: masterful Zin!

Fred Scherrer learned his craft at the vaunted Dehlinger winery and started making wine on his own in 1991. This is truly the type of wine people covet, and say very little about, so as not to shrink their own precious allocations. Scherrer can be included in a rarified group alongside Ridge, Turley and Bedrock as one of the most sought after producers of old-vine zin in the country. It is ASTOUNDING we got a few cases. If you have yet to experiece the magic of these wines, there is no time like the present!

This vineyard was originally planted in 1912, and, well, we’ll just let the review speak for itself only adding that this wine is in a beautiful spot right now!

Incredible stuff, killer price. $37.95! First come, first served…!

About the Producer

Owner/winemaker Fred Scherrer completed his technical training at U.C. Davis. Fred began making Zinfandel from his father’s vineyard in 1991. The first vintage consisted of 600 cases. Over the next 5 years, Fred was able to slowly expand production of Zinfandel as he continued his “day job” as winemaker at Dehlinger. In 1997, Fred was able to expand production to include Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay from the Scherrer Vineyard and in 1998 began making Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Russian River and Sonoma Coast vineyards.
