Cockburn's Vintage Port 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

99 James Suckling -
This shows fantastic graphite and dark-berry character with black-stone undertones and hints of dried roses. Full-bodied and very tight and precise. Good kick in the end. Love the polished tannins, which are totally folded into the wine. Reminds me of the 1947 Cockburn. Try in 2024.

99-point Cockburn's port! One of the legends of Porto knocked it out of the park in the 2016 vintage. James Suckling favorably compared this to their legendary 1947 vintage port. This is something that will drink great right out of the gate but the real magic will happen with decades more in the cellar.

About the Producer

In 1815, the Scotsman Robert Cockburn and his brother John, already successful wine merchants in Leith near Edinburgh, set up a branch of their firm in Porto: R & J Cockburn's. The Cockburn family continued to run the company until well into the twentieth century. Other families though joined the extended family of Cockburn's & Co during this time. The Wauchopes, the Smithes, the Teages and the Cobbs were amongst them. The Cockburn's & Co family thus gradually swelled to include some of the finest winemakers and Port tasters that the trade has ever known. Together, the Cockburn's & Co family built themselves a remarkable reputation for fine Vintage Port.
