Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Brut 2007 - First Bottle

Reviews

95 Vinous -
The 2007 Clos des Goisses is gorgeous. Almost shockingly finessed and light on its feet for Goisses, the 2007 is a wine of superb elegance. The power and richness of Goisses is there, but in the background. It will be many years before the 2007 blossoms into a complete, fully expressive Champagne. Even so, it is striking today. With time, hints of lemon confit, chamomile and marzipan develop in the glass, but readers will have to cellar the 2007 for at least five years, maybe more, to get the full Goisses experience.
95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2007 Clos des Goisses Brut blends 65% Pinot Noir with 35% Chardonnay and opens with a bright, highly refined and complex bouquet of red fruits, fresh ginger and roasted hazelnuts. On the palate, this is a pure, highly refined and very mineral Clos des Goisses that reveals a long, complex, beautifully tensioned and iodine-laced finish. Just Beautiful! This bottle was disgorged in September 2016. Tasted April 2018.

The infamous Clos de Goisses from the steep (45 degrees to be exact!) walled vineyard in Mareuil-sur-Ay, the first terroir to be vinified and blended separately in Champagne. It really doesn't get much better than this! Oak aging and blocked malolactic fermentation are some of the secrets to this wine, which is know to age with the very best of wines made in the world. A few notes from the pros:

About the Producer

For almost five hundred years, the Philipponnat family has left its mark on the soil of Champagne. In the 16th century their ancestors were winegrowers and merchants who supplied the court of Louis XIV from the most respected terroirs of the time, Ay. It's magnificent 18th century cellars and its historic steep sloping Clos des Goisses are hallmarks of one of the most legendary grower producers in the world. With 49 acres under vine in Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay and Avenay, and a unique solera system where small amounts of wine from every vintage become part of their reserve wine, Philipponnat is one of the all time greats.
