Superuco Cabernet Franc Calcareo Granito de Tupungato 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Sourced from two small plots in Tupungato Winelands in Gualtallary, the 2016 Calc?reo Granito de Tupungato Cabernet Franc is released later than the others, so they are now selling the stellar 2016 vintage, the coolest year in history, which resulted in moderate alcohol and very good freshness in the wines. This is floral and very aromatic, spicy and peppery, faintly varietal, complex, elegant and balanced. It has a mineral palate with very fine, chalky tannins, beautifully textured, and it's focused, clean, sharp and vertical, with some austerity. It finishes dry and long. It has superb finesse, a more elegant view of the Gualtallary wilderness. 4,000 bottles were filled in December 2017.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
Wow! For $38?? You can barely even FIND this wine in the states! Just 4,000 bottles were made! Read on for tons of seriously delicious reasons you want this in your cellar and on your table. In a landscape of many industrially/chemically farmed vineyards in Mendoza, SuperUco is a shining star in biodynamically farmed, authentic, terroir-driven wines from the most prominent sub-region in the far north of the Uco Valley in Mendoza, called Tupungato. It is in this marginal climate, planted at the foot of the Andes mountains at extreme elevations, that the best wines in the Southern Hemisphere are crafted. Specifically important is the sub-zone, Gualtallary, which has been making a lot of noise on the international wine scene, recently earning two of Argentina’s first ever 100-point scores from Wine Advocate. Today’s Cab Franc is pulled from two tiny biodynamically farmed plots in Gualtallary, not far from Catena’s Adrianna vineyard, the source of the two recent 100-pointers.

As the name Calcareo implies, these wines are sourced from chalky, calcareous soils, but with combinations of granite stones in the vineyards. This is pure and expressive of its place, brought up in large cement amphorae and neutral oak barrels as to not interfere with the terroir. 2016 was a cool season (the coolest on record) that produced wines of supreme elegance. The result is a mineral-packed, clean as the Andean water, floral and spicy wine that is dynamic, crunchy and clearly ageworthy. Simply put, this is a stunning Cabernet Franc and one of our top discoveries of the year!

Astoundingly well-priced at $37.95 --- $227.70! Incredible!

About the Producer

The Michelini brothers, also winemakers at Mendoza’s renowned Zorzal and Passionate wineries, planted and built their biodynamic winery in the Los Chacayes subregion of the Uco Valley in Argentina in 2012.  SuperUco was originally inspired with the intent to showcase three unique calcareous soil types from some of the most highly regarded subregions of the Uco Valley.

The two hectare farm is planted in circles with 360 degrees of exposure to the sun. The different varietals are planted from the center outward, as its vegetative cycle dictates. Neal Martin (formerly Wine Advocate, now Vinous) commented on the Michelini Bros. “Their passion and commitment, their spirituality and, for want of a better word, 'purity' in terms of doing what they do for the love of it rather than financial reward, brought to mind the Lopez de Heredia sisters in Rioja. If you want cutting edge, meticulously crafted Argentinean wines hot footed from one of the most exciting sub-regions (Gualtallary), then look no further.”
