Aubry Brut Ivoire et Ebene Brut Premier Cru 2013 - First Bottle

Reviews

93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Offering up a lovely bouquet of blanched almonds, citrus oil, white flowers and subtle hints of peat, Aubry's 2013 Brut Ivoire et Ebene is medium to full-bodied, taut and incisive, with racy acids, a vibrant core of fruit and a penetratingly saline finish. The wine's delicate, low-pressure mousse sets off its racy profile to fine effect. This new release was disgorged in November 2018.
93 Vinous -
The 2013 Ivoire et Ebène is a blend of 50% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir and 25% Meunier done in oak. Still very reticent, the 2013 needs time to soften. It is another wine in this range built on serious power and textural resonance, both of which make it a wine for the dinner table.

The new vintage is like turning AC/DC up full blast with the windows down! This is like a lightning rod to your dome, channeling the chalky, gravelly mineral power of this unique site into liquid euphoria. Man, we drink (and taste) a ton of Champagne, but this one stands out in any line up. THE PRICE?! This is a must for all of our wonderful Champagne loving locals!

Born from a single vineyard in Jouy-lès-Reims with a river bisecting the site and the geology. One side is the "Ivoire", its chalky soils the color of ivory, and it's planted all to chardonnay. The other side, "Ebene" is mostly gravel with pinot noir and pinot meunier planted. The resulting wine is a juxtaposition of the mineral elegance and fruit-driven purity and power. The chardonnay provides the precision, mineral cut and elegance and the pinot provides the intensity, weight and fruit expression of the pinot.

A brilliant wine with a double 93 point score to boot which doesn't quite do this justice. As Galloni puts it, "built on serious power and textural resonance, both of which make it a wine for the dinner table". While we agree, we think this makes a pretty good stand-alone bottle for anytime drinking. Its beautiful, soft, caressing bubbles showcase the racy profile and vinous quality of this wine. Time for a restock after the holidays...you won't find a better price!

About the Producer

The Aubry estate is in the village of Jouy-les-Reims in the western part of the Montagne de Reims. Twin brothers Pierre and Philippe farm parcels in the limestone and clay soils of Jouy, as well as sites in three other premier cru villages: Pargny-les-Reims, Villedommange, and Coulommes-la-Montagne. Aubry also farms one and a half hectares of ancient grape varieties still permitted by A.O.C. law. Their plantings of Petit Mesilier, Fromenteau (Pinot Gris) and Arbanne were completed in 1989 to mark the 200 year anniversary of grape growing by the Aubry family.
