Domaine Gerard Charvin Chateauneuf du Pape 2012 - First Bottle

Reviews

95 Vinous -
Bright ruby. Explosive red and dark berry scents are complicated by suggestions of fresh flowers, Asian spices and smoky minerals. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering intense black raspberry and rose pastille flavors that put on weight with air. Gentle tannins sneak in slowly and fold smoothly into the wine's sweet fruit on the strikingly long spicy, floral finish.
94 Wine Spectator -
This is gorgeous, featuring rosemary-infused cassis, tobacco leaf and savory notes out front, followed by lush plum and blackberry fruit accents. The structure is pebbly in feel but well-integrated, with a smoldering lavender hint lining the finish. Should blossom with cellaring. Best from 2017 through 2026. 450 cases imported.

With almost 10 years of age on it, this wine is really starting to come into its own. 95 and 94 points and a wine that should continue to improve with a few more years of bottle age, but it's hard to imagine that with how well this drinks right now. Just a few bottles remain!

About the Producer

Laurent Charvin has only 10 ha of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Until recently, Laurent was almost the only grower to still vinify traditionally, with whole-cluster fermentations. Now others are beginning to copy him. In addition to leaving the stems, Laurent’s élevage is uniquely in concrete tank, no barrel. Laurent is regarded as one of the top wine-makers in the appellation by Guy Julien, famous owner of the restaurant Beaugraviere in Mondragon, as well as other top sommeliers and wine writers in France, with a two-star rating by Revue du Vin de France.
