Lang & Reed Two-Fourteen Cabernet Franc Napa Valley 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

93 Decanter -
Before they moved to California, former sommeliers John and Tracey Skupny loved Loire reds. When they began their own brand nearly 30 years ago, the focus on Cabernet Franc was an easy choice. This one is named for Clone 214, the best Loire Cab Franc clone available in California. The wine is a mega-mouthful of flavour: blue, red and purple fruits woven together with cocoa and espresso. Dense and a little rustic, it benefits from decanting.

If you don’t think of Lang & Reed when you think of Cabernet Franc, this deal is sure to change your mind! Their Two-Fourteen Cab Franc is one of the single most loved in the country – perhaps the world – and today you can get a 6-pack for over 60% off (or 50% off anything less than six)!

That’s right, dear Lang & Reed admirers, it is back! If you’re new to L&R, this is an “insider,” locals-fav classic if we’ve ever seen one. We had this impeccable 2017 vintage rolled up in a three-pack, and somehow persuaded the good folks at the winery to give us access to their library and score a wee bit more of this 93 point stunner of Loire-in-Napa style Cabernet Franc. Best price by far you will EVER see – but far more limited than we care to admit!

The Two-Fourteen bottling is a single-clone, single-vineyard Cabernet Franc (from the heralded Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard, no less)! This is one of the top sites for Cabernet Franc in the entire Napa Valley, making its way into prized bottlings from Russell Bevan, Chappellet vineyard, and countless others. In their 93 point review, Decanter calls this “the best Loire Cab Franc clone available in California” – and we have no additional notes! The words of the year are “balanced” and “fresh” for 2017...even though wildfires and frosts threatened a good deal of crops, it wound up being a mighty excellent vintage!

The 2017 is an incredibly complex and layered wine, with an earthy edge uplifted with fresh and juicy red raspberries, cherries, and blueberries, and a floral aroma akin to dusty violets. The powerful fruit and structure of the wine are nicely balanced with soft and elegant herbs, alongside a delicate acidity, earthiness, and the almost-imperceptible “green spice” nuance that punctuates the classic Loire Valley Cabernet Francs of legend. Plenty of life left here in this 8-years-young wine, and perfect for drinking now and anytime over the next 5+ years. Shipping included on just three bottles will save you over $120 off the winery price – but things ramp up further still if you go for six...with a savings of over $330 thanks to a 61+% discount on First Bottle’s purchase price! Don’t miss this!

PAIRING IDEAS: Flank steak, marinated in olive oil, garlic, and rosemary, then flash grilled over a wood fire. Serve with a bold, tangy chimichurri and plenty of grilled veggies.

About the Producer

Tracey and John Skupny founded Lang & Reed Napa Valley in 1993 with the vision of crafting expressive and enjoyable wines, particularly focused on the unique qualities of Cabernet Franc. Their journey began in Kansas City, where they worked as sommeliers before moving to California in 1980 and settling in Napa Valley by 1984. They were captivated by the distinct aromatics and flavors of Cabernet Franc, inspired by its use in France's Loire Valley and Bordeaux. This fascination led to the creation of a 1993 prototype that embodied purity of flavor, balance, and structure, marking the birth of Lang & Reed Napa Valley. Named after their sons, J Reed and Jerzy Lang, the winery remains family-owned and operated, with nearly 40 years of wine industry experience shaping their approach. Winemaking, for the Skupnys, is the intersection of art and science, aiming to create wines that bring pleasure and showcase varietal authenticity. Their winemaking philosophy combines an open-minded, youthful approach with exacting attention to detail, producing wines praised for their balance and restraint. They work closely with grape growers to match the right clones with ideal soil and growing techniques, allowing the terroir to express itself in the wines. This meticulous approach is evident in their Cabernet Franc, sourced from carefully selected vineyards in Napa Valley, Alexander Valley, and Lake County. Expanding their search to Mendocino has allowed them to apply the same dedication to terroir and varietal expression in their Chenin Blanc, resulting in wines of substance, structure, and true varietal character.
