We sorely wish we had more of this immaculate St. Helena cabernet sauvignon, from the masterful team behind Gallica, led by one of our no-question favorite Napa winemakers, Rosemary Cakebread. She earned a degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis in 1979 and went on to hold stints at some impressive landing pads – including a harvest in Bordeaux and time working for Inglenook, Mumm, and Spottswoode before launching her own brand, Gallica, with a keen focus on her prized variety, cabernet sauvignon. Her singular goal was to create graceful, organically farmed, single-vineyard wines that showcase the story of the land on which they were grown. Vinous calls her “one of the most understated and thoughtful winemakers in Napa Valley,” and we can only unabashedly agree.
The 2021 Estate cabernet pulls from a small vineyard planted to Clone 4 on St. George rootstock in 1990. The Cortina soils here have low fertility and run deep, a perfect environment for red wines to soar, and one that yields wines reminiscent of those produced here decades ago. This is an organic, 100% cabernet sauvignon bottling from a growing year that will go down as one of Napa’s all-time greats, producing some of the most immaculate, impressively structured, gargantuanly complex grapes perhaps ever in the valley.
Vinous’s 98-point review aptly describes the wine as, “Ample, deep and explosive, the 2021 possesses marvelous depth and textural intensity to burn.” Yes, yes, yes – this is a beastly beauty with elegant edges, yet mighty power to captivate and evolve. Brambles of blueberries, dusty roses, plum skins, and fir tree emerge at the front of the pack, with notes of blackberry pie and earthier accents of walnut, dried herbs, and damp forest floor coming in with the next sip. This has both savory and fruit-forward elements, wrapped in a mineral-laced bow with polished tannins that allow the finish to last a solid minute, perhaps more. An absolutely knockout Estate cabernet from one of the most prized winemakers we’ve come across…don’t even think about waiting to add this to your collection! Make it two for a significant price drop and free shipping!
PAIRING IDEAS: Hear me out...meatloaf. But not just your mom’s sad, dry loaf (sorry, mom). Try this flavorful and moist Greek rendition, with feta, fresh herbs, plus a side of tzatziki for something surprising and rich alongside this hearty cabernet.
