Chateau de la Negly La Clape La Porte du Ciel 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

99 Jeb Dunnuck -
Flirting with perfection, the 2016 Coteaux Du Languedoc La Clape Porte Du Ciel had just been bottled 10 days ago, which makes this showing even more impressive. Magical notes of crème de cassis, blackberries, cured meats, olive tapenade, and graphite all emerge from this deep, powerful Syrah that has ultra-fine tannins, not a hard edge to be found, perfect balance, and a huge finish. It’s a singular, heavenly Syrah that could come from nowhere else. It’s going to thrill over the coming two decades.

The finest vintage of this cuvée I've ever tasted (and I've had all of them), the 2016 La Clape Porte du Ciel is about as inky black colored as a moonless night and boasts an exotic bouquet of blackcurrants, black olives, crushed rocks, and wood smoke. Deep, incredibly full-bodied, and concentrated, it still stays light and elegant on the palate, with no sensation of weight or heaviness. It's an incredible barrel sample that's going to benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for two decades. As always, it’s a singular, world-class wine.

Bottled just a month before my visit, the 2016 La Clape la Porte du Ciel looks even more impressive than it did from barrel. The warmth I noted last year has seemingly been absorbed into this huge, inky-purple wine. Pencil shavings accent classic Syrah notes of licorice, blackberries and grilled meat on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is supple and velvety, and blueberries and plums emerge on the long finish. Give it a couple of years if you have patience, and drink it over the next 15+ years.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
“It’s a singular, heavenly Syrah that could come from nowhere else. It’s going to thrill over the coming two decades.” - Jeb Dunnuck. Super-consultant Claude Gros and winemaker Cyril Chamontin completely knock it out of the park again. Deep, expansive, rockstar Syrah - not for the shy! Those of you who know the Negly wines (Clos des Truffiers is one of them) will already be off and putting some in the cart. They are outrageously overdelivering, powerful, sexy, gorgeous, hedonistic wines that also exude grace and class. We get them each year in EXTREMELY small quantities and when they hit, you need to jump, especially in a world-class vintage like 2016! These wines have officially reached a cult-like status for their singularity and their thrilling personalities. DON’T MISS! Did we mention 99 points and $110?!

About the Producer

The Chateau de la Negly is located in the Languedoc, overlooking the Mediterranean, in the exceptional terroir of La Clape. They original Negly vineyard spanned 123 acres on clay limestone soils which gives Negly its signature palate impact and broad shoulders. In 2006 they acquired the neighboring 62 acres on alluvial sand and sandstone soils which was replanted and now is farmed sustainably and by hand. Consultant Claude Gros has further refined the work in the cellar it's not a mystery why La Negly is the top of the class in Southern France.
