Massolino Barolo Margheria 2013 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Wine Spectator -
This red is packed with plum, cherry, leather and iron aromas and flavors. There's a solid base of tannins, but also freshness and balance. Just needs time for that core of ripe fruit to meld with the structure. Picks up tobacco and wild herb details on the finish, along with an echo of mineral. Best from 2022 through 2042. 550 cases made, 150 cases imported.
95 Vinous -
The 2013 Barolo Margheria is deep, layered and highly expressive, with a super-classic interplay of beguiling Serralunga aromatics, fruit and structure. Menthol, pine, tobacco, wild cherry and rose petal emerge from this deceptively mid-weight, muscular Barolo. The proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, the 2013 Margheria has so much to offer, but readers will have to be patient. This is an especially brooding Barolo from Massolino. And it is gorgeous.
95 James Suckling -
A Barolo with lots of cherry jam, chocolate and hazelnut character. Flowers too. Medium body and, beautifully polished tannins with a fantastic texture. Hard not to drink now but made for aging.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
Serralunga is ground zero for Massolino. The family has a long history of innovation and excellence dating back to its founding in 1896, and the words typically used to describe these hard-to-find wines are “classic”, “traditional”, “harmonious” and “made for aging”.

The soils around Serralunga are Helvetian in origin, older formations than the Tortonian soils on the La Morra side of the zone. There's a lot of marl and iron, giving the wines potential for longevity which Massolino surely captures in these wines. Parafada has some of the estate's oldest vines, about 60 years old. The wines from the limestone soils there are full, rich and round, with plenty of flesh offsetting the tannic structure.

We are thrilled to have a small parcel to offer today at fine pricing, Galloni flipped for these: "...this is an especially brooding Barolo from Massolino. And it is gorgeous." This historic estate is on a tear! These are a must!

Just a few cases of each!

About the Producer

The history of the Massolinos and their wine became entwined with the history of Serralunga d’Alba in 1896, when Giovanni founded the Estate. Giovanni was the very first person to bring the electric current to the village. An enterprising, tenacious and creative man, progenitor of a family that has made the combination of inspiration and tradition something to be proud of.
