Antinori Chianti Classico Badia a Passignano Gran Selezione 2015 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 Vinous -
The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano is a terrific example of how responsive Sangiovese can be to site. Here, the flavors are darker and richer, while at the same time the wine possesses a level of textural resonance and breadth that distinguishes it from the more linear wines Antinori makes at the Tignanello vineyard. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice and menthol fill out the wine's frame effortlessly. This is another stellar wine from Antinori.
94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano is a pure expression of Sangiovese. Fruit is sourced from the San Donato area of the appellation that is not an official subzone yet but is increasingly emerging as such. This wine is distinguished by a beautiful level of openness and softness (on the Sangiovese spectrum, which means you also get a bright dose of acidity). That softness or lushness comes in part due to the warm vintage but also thanks to the winemaking approach that relies on larger barrels (from 300 to 500 liters) and Hungarian oak that tends to be more porous and thickly textured for increased passage of oxygen. The wine offers beautiful balance between its dark fruit and savory spice comments. This Chianti Classico Gran Selezione was not produced in 2014.
94 James Suckling -
A 2015 red with opulent dark fruit, such as ripe raspberries and blackcurrants, follow through to a medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a deliciously fresh finish. Just the right balance of acidity and fruit to give it nerve and brilliance. Drink in 2021.

Badia a Passignano Gran Selezione is the flagship wine of this historic estate in Chianti Classico, just a few miles south of Antinori’s infamous Tignanello vineyard. Produced exclusively from a selection of the finest Sangiovese grapes from the entire 160 acre property, and only made in the finest of vintages (this wine was not made in 2014). This is Tignanello’s brother from another mother, and he’s got a whole lot to say about Sangiovese. Beautiful, dark, intense and velvety on the palate, this is wonderfully drinkable and packed with flavors of macerated red and blue berries, long, lustrous, and nicely balanced with the slightest dash of savory balsamic notes and judiciously applied oak. Just read some of the reviews for some more data points, if you like, but trust your wine merchant on this fine Monday -- you will wish you bought more when you taste it!

BEST USA price -- we have 20 cases and when it’s gone, it's gonzo. First come, first served…!

About the Producer

The Antinori family has been committed to the art of winemaking for over six centuries since 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member, of the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri, the Florentine Winemakers Guild.

Badia a Passignano is located above the town of Sambuca Val di Pesa, just 3 kilometers south of the Tenuta Tignanello estate in Chianti Classico. The estate’s historical importance in the Chianti region is well documented in hundreds of volumes that are kept in the Florence State Archives that provide descriptions and details about the Sangiovese vineyards and local crops over the centuries.
