Paolo Conterno Barolo Ginestra Riserva 2010 - First Bottle

Reviews

97 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Wow, this is really quite a wine. The 2010 Barolo Riserva Ginestra is guided by three lucky stars: First, it is made by an excellent producer. Second, it comes from an excellent vintage. And third, it comes from an excellent vineyard site. This is a stunning achievement that is teeming with life, intensity, elegance, pedigree and sheer excitement. The bouquet achieves impressive balance with fruit, spice, mineral and tertiary tones that are all played forward with equal intensity. There is a spot of sweetness on the close (with 15% alcohol) that adds to the volume and fullness of the mouthfeel. This wine merits a special place at the back of your cellar where it can age undisturbed for the next decade or two.
97 James Suckling -
A beautiful, late-release 2010 Barolo Riserva, whose first impression is pink grapefruit, before settling on more familiar territory of dark cherries, lemon peel, lavender and heather with a touch of cedar. Full body, savory yet generous tannins and a long, chewy finish. Floral undertones throughout. Handsomely indented Burgundy bottle that you should seek out. Drink in 2022.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
2010 provided near perfect conditions in Barolo and produced some of the most exciting wines in the region in the last decade. Many of the wines however have been extremely tannic and closed since bottling. Paolo Conterno's Ginestra Riserva is surprisingly open and accessible even at this stage showing fresh violets, dusty cherry, white smoke, orange blossom and tar aromas and flavors with a backdrop of garrigue and cedar in the finish. The acids and tannins are no doubt present, just beautifully integrated...this is a absolute stunner! Beautiful now, this will reward the patient collector with decades of drinking pleasure.

About the Producer

It all started way back in 1886, when Paolo Conterno founded the Casa della Ginestra, dedicated to the production of Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto wines. An indefatigable worker with a mind of great intuition, he devoted the most favorable parts of the Ginestra hillside to the growing of the grapes, subdividing them by type, exposure and terrain. Furthermore, he had the foresight to predict the existence of a market of connoisseurs of superior quality products, selling his own wine in wooden kegs and produced by himself in his own cellar. Paolo was succeeded by his son Carlo and his wife Giuseppina. The company was subsequently run by Paolo and Caterina Conterno and today the company is managed by their son Giorgio.
