La Chablisienne Chablis Valmur Grand Cru 2014
This is absolutely TERRIFIC, amazingly well-priced Chablis at an extremely high level (especially when considering its price!). The 2014 vintage provided ideal conditions for making world class whites throughout Burgundy. Wine Spectator gave this the highest vintage rating they have ever given out for the region's whites in their history in fact. The wines are rich and ripe while maintaining fresh acidity, and the best examples are packed with minerality, such is today's offering.
“La Chablisienne” is a CO-OP that began in 1923, and has really hit its collective stride in the last decade or so. In the battle for best Grand Cru in Chablis most people align themselves into two camps: Valmur or Les Clos. They are adjacent to each other on a tiny slope with perfect south exposure, overlooking the picturesque village. It’s impossible to pick sides as both wines capture the profundity of what Grand Cru Chablis is all about. This is ground zero for minerally, ageworthy chardonnay at its most crystiline, concentrated and pure. Valmur has a full southern exposure and deep, rocky, limestone soils making powerful wines with a verticality to their minerality and an enormous capacity to age gracefully.
We heartily agree with Wine Advocate’s assessment - “clean, detailed bouquet with attractive white flower scents marrying with the citrus peel, nectarine and granite aromas. The palate is fresh and detailed, saline in the mouth with a precise and intense finish that is both complex and delicious.”
Astoundingly well-priced -- almost low enough to drink Grand Cru on a regular basis, don’t you think?
While it lasts!
