Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Wine Spectator -
A singed chestnut accent leads off here, followed by a sappy core of steeped cherry, raspberry and plum fruit, infused liberally with tobacco, brick dust and garrigue notes. Reveals a brawny edge, but there?s ample fruit in the end. A rock-solid old-school style that should cruise in the cellar.

A wine that’s going to rival or surpass the 2015, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée shows the quality of this awesome vintage with its deep, powerful, concentrated style. While Laurence says her 2015s remind her of her 2010s, I find a certain 2010-like purity in this wine as well as killer notes of black raspberries, blueberries, garrigue, and pepper. Possessing both power and finesse, full body, sweet tannins, and a great finish, don’t miss this beauty.

Still in foudres, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee is even more impressive than it was last year. It's still firmly tannic, but the fruit seems to be growing in stature, adding volume and richness sufficient to round out the tannins. This full-bodied, concentrated wine offers hints of mocha and raspberries, but it seems a bit more monolithic than the 2015 at the moment.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
Tremendous price!! DO NOT MISS! This is a must for serious Chateauneuf collectors. The Cuvée Réservée in this spectacular vintage is a blockbuster, in the best “old-school” style Laurence Feraud is known for. Great direct-imported price!

First come, first served...we bought all we could, but you know how that goes….

PEGAU. I clearly remember my first taste of Pegau from a great vintage (like 2016 is) -- the 1990. I’d never had such a serious, wildly complex, soulful Chateauneuf. That wine is STILL singing today and the 2016 will be a COVETED bottle in your cellar in the future. AT THIS PRICE?? I’d buy all you can. Just think how you’ll be patting yourself on the back in a decade!!

HERE is a good article from Wine spec on Pegau and Laurence’s philosophy, if you’d like to dig a bit deeper...it’s no exaggeration that this vintage is one of the greatest in at least a decade --- if you buy one, buy THIS! MAGNUMS, too -- so cool!

First come, first served!

About the Producer

The ancestors of the Feraud family first planted grape vines in the 17th centruy, next to their olive trees in Chateauneuf du Pape. In 1987, Laurence joined her father Paul at Domaine du Pegau. At the time, the wine was still be bottled under the name Domaine Feraud. They changed the name to Pegau, which is and old Provencal term for an ancient jug for wine discovered during the excavations of the 14th century, Avignon Popes Palace.
