While Saint-Aubin is best known for its chardonnay, longtime vignerons at Fornerot have insisted that some plots – like this rocky hillside – are born for elegant and expressive pinot noir. One sip in, and we were assured… this is classy, perfumed Premier Cru Burgundy that punches far above its price point!

The Fornerot family has thrived in the commune of Saint-Aubin for more than 500 years. A long-forgotten and under-appreciated region of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin sits between two superstars of Côte de Beaune's southern section – sandwiched between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, with vineyards overlooking the Grand Cru of Montrachet itself. Historically, the vast majority of planting here has been dedicated to chardonnay, but with climate change causing a shift in Burgundy’s landscape over the past several decades – pinot noir plantings are on the rise.

Les Perrières is located just outside of the northern edge of the village of Saint-Aubin on a southeast facing slope on white marl soils mixed with clay deposits and covered by the stones for which the vineyard is named. The plantings here all stem from the 1960s and 70s – giving an average vine age of just over 50 years old. Vinification is traditional – with de-stemmed fruit macerated and fermented over 15-20 days, followed by gently pressing and gravity racking into barrel. The oak regiment is light – only about 15% new French oak, for 12 months. Another 6 months in tank before bottling without fining or filtering and the wine is ready to be sold.

This is newly arrived to us and might be one of the best Burgundy Rouge finds of the year. Clean, perfumed, and delightfully silky – the profile is awash with peonies and rose petals, with red berry fruits of strawberries and raspberries, followed by Burgundian black truffles, forest floor, and Earl Grey tea with a spot of cream. This is velvety smooth, supple, and long on the finish – simply elegant throughout. This Premier Cru Burg is hands-down one of the top reds in the category we've tasted all year. Grab a few bottles and cozy up to some stunning sipping pleasure!
