We tasted this as the precursor to Jason’s fantastic 99 point Mt. Veeder cabernet sauvignon we featured a few weeks back, and… wow! This was a standout in its own right. Most California chenins have this over-worked, over-extracted nature to them – but this… just elegant, zippy, and fresh as all get out!

Jason Court worked for years, side by side, as the understudy to one of Napa’s top winemakers, the one and only Chris Carpenter. They were friends from their Chicago bartending days, and Jason moved out here to follow in Chris’s path after his career in the film industry was brought to a halt by the 2002 Union strike. Chris brought Jason on to help make the wines of Cardinale, Lokoya, and La Jota (top-notch wines, all), and Jason even ended up living on-site at La Jota for four years to be present for all aspects of making culty Napa wines. Now, with over 20 years of experience, he’s headed out on his own, making a tiny amount of some epically spectacular wines.

This delectable offering hails from the Saureel Vineyard in the Gold Hills region of El Dorado. The aromas are loaded with floral notes of acacia and honeysuckle, with myriad stone fruits and citrus flavors quick on the heels. Beeswax, lanolin, and whispers of tropical fruit complete the flavor profile – but it is perhaps the contrast of bright acidity and luscious texture that make this wine such a marvel. Under 12% ABV keeps you sipping until the bottle runs dry, and the food possibilities are nearly endless! Not much was ever made, and we’re thrilled to have this rare creature at a price even the winery can’t beat!

Food Pairing: Give this a go with a medley of fried sea creatures and vegetables – a la the classic Italian Fritto Misto. The high acid of the chenin will cut through the fat, and the clean fruit and mineral components will take the salinity of the seafood to a whole other level!

Music Suggestion: Something soft and mellow to tame the electric vibrations of this energetic wines seems the right call here… so check out The Swell Season’s “Lies”
