Domaine Serguier Chateauneuf-du-Pape Revelation 2021
Long time First Bottlers know...Domaine Serguier is a tried and true favorite! Unbelievably tiny production that we discovered years back, making a handful of wines from some of CdP’s oldest vineyards – in a tiny, completely charming cellar underneath the very streets of Châteauneuf itself! This new 2021 marks some of the best-ever wines for this estate – a “Revelation”, indeed!
Daniel and Aurélie Serguier are some of my favorite people I’ve met in CdP – and not just because they fed me an obscene amount of the freshest black truffles I’ve ever seen on our last visit, either. The family plots go back over 4 generations and over 100 years – and up until the mid-90s – all this impeccable fruit was sold to the revered Pierre Usseglio. Les Terres Blanches, Le Pointu, Les Pialons – these notable plots are now the bulk of Serguier’s own production – combining here to create a gorgeous mosaic of flavors that simply scream CdP!!!
Serguier’s signature style is in full effect in this one, with all the cherries, sweet herbs, and toasted peppercorn going on. Add on to that crushed raspberries, kirsch, white pepper, dried violets, garrigue, pomegranate, red currants, chocolate shavings, black truffles, sweet anise...all wrapped up in an elegant, medium weight, and extremely fresh CdP package.
The blend here is 90% grenache / 5% mourvedre, 4% cinsault & syrah, with a mix of 1% white grape varieties. The grenache hails from some exceptional plots of old vines – with an average age of 90 years old – all in the very heart of CdP, and only a stone’s throw from such mythical estate plots as Vaudieu and Chateau Rayas! This is some serious pedigree for under $40, and again, the 2021 batch is the best, the purest, the freshest Serguier wines we’ve ever tasted. Do yourself a solid and grab a few – you won’t regret it!
PAIRING IDEAS: Go with a local favorite – Beef Daube. A slowly braised stew of beef, with root vegetables and plenty of herbs – it’s a go-to favorite this time of year and the perfect match for a glass (or three) of this stunner.
About the Producer
When Daniel took over in 1993 they were still providing fruit to Pierre Usseglio, and it wasn't until their contract ended that he started using fruit from their 7.2 hectares in Chateauneuf to produce their own wine. Most of the grapes are destemmed and then aged in a combination of mostly used French oak and around 30% new French oak.Domaine Serguier can be enjoyed young, but shows best with 3-5 years of age. Great vintages such as the 2016 can easily push 10+ years aging if you'd like to keep a few in the cellar.
