Massican Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 2022
The new vintage of Massican’s uber-fresh, incredibly complex sauvignon blanc is here! We can’t wait for these wines to hit our shelves every year – from undoubtedly our favorite white wine producer in Napa!
Dan Petrovski’s Massican Wines just might be the only exclusively white wine producer in the Napa Valley… and if you’ve never had these wines, there are no two ways about it – you are missing out! These are some of the best white wines in the United States – ones that consistently receive scores in the upper 90s. This wine, in each of the previous four vintages, has earned alternating 94 or 95-point reviews from Wine Enthusiast...making it easily one of the most consistent performers in Napa today!
Dan created these wines in homage to Italy – with this sauvignon blanc dedicated to the crisp, delicately floral, bright, and zippy sauvignons of Friuli, in northern Italy. Originally, this white was simply called sauvignon, just like the wines of that region – but with sauvignon blanc’s offspring, cabernet sauvignon, enjoying far more widespread popularity here in Napa – the name was changed to fit the local naming standards. But the wine! My, oh my, this just pumps with exceptional quality, uniqueness, and overall class that perfectly showcases the stylings of Italy, as expressed through the lens of some of California’s greatest white grape vineyards. This newest release is something to behold. Is it better than the past few vintages? Maybe – but there is no doubt that the consistency of excellence continues!
Trust us and don’t wait for the scores! You’ll understand when you taste this – so floral, like sage blossoms and crushed lemongrass, leading into a palate awash with tropical sensations of pineapple and barely ripe mango, and then a flinty, river rock crunch of minerality, and a zesting of lemon and lime zest – all unified with the wine’s persistent and elevating acidity. Truly remarkable juice, and perfectly aligned with the rest of this year’s white wine releases – Dan’s homage to Italy’s regional whites is once again a masterclass in complexity and freshness, with textural elements deftly done. Simply irresistible and almost too easy to drink...which is a shame, really, ‘cause these wines age beautifully like a Cotat Sancerre – yet we just never seem to be able to hold back on drinking these! Maybe we’ll succeed this year, but one glass in, and it seems unlikely. Get more than you think, and as ever. First come, first served!
PAIRING IDEAS: You know those butter boards you’ve seen on social media – with the softened butter spread across a platter, then decorated with herbs, edible flowers, and the like? I did one of those, but with goat cheese for this. It. Was. EPIC. Fresh baguette rounds, some violas, tarragon, oxalis flowers, miner’s lettuce, toasted pepitas, and mini pickled peppers – sprinkled with some Espelette pepper and a drizzle of honey.
