Terroir al Limit Les Manyes 2014 - First Bottle

Reviews

100 Falstaff -
Cool herbs, very floral (rose), red fruits, Szechuan pepper, gingerbread spice, some cinnamon blossom, very fine and balanced on the palate, elegant with notes of cherries, nice juiciness. Very long finish with fruity and spicy nuances.
98 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2014 Les Manyes was bottled a little earlier, in June 2016. In many wineries in Priorat, 2013 is clearly better than 2014, but it's not that clear in the case here, and you have to take it wine by wine. In the case of this Les Manyes, I think 2014 was the big surprise, with a combination of depth, perfume, subtleness and power difficult to achieve. The clay and chalky soils provide for an extraordinary texture of tannins, a lot less coarse than those from slate soils. It distills all the Mediterranean herbs and flowers, the essence of ripe red cherries and wild strawberries with some chalky minerality in a nose and palate that is close to perfection. This is a tour de force Garnacha from... chalky soils in Priorat! There are 1,008 bottles produced.
95 Wine Enthusiast -
Cinnamon and clove aromas stick out on a nose with light red-fruit scents. Power with restraint describes the palate on this varietal Garnacha from old vines. Dark, slightly baked flavors of brandied cherry and mulled berry fruits finish with a touch of oak and a recurrence of lightly baked fruit notes. Drink through 2026.
93 Decanter -
The label tells you that this is a ‘Vi d’altura’, a high-sited wine. Indeed the region can boast few higher, and this is pure old vine Garnatxa of 70 to 80 years old, grown at 900m up on Montsant itself, on clay-limestone soils rather than llicorella. It is aged in old barrels and big wood, though in the future it will be concrete. Many high-grown Grenache wines resemble ‘Pinots of the south’, notably in Spain’s Gredos region, and this is indeed light in colour with lifted, fragrant fruit aromas of strawberries and meadow flowers. On the palate, by contrast, it is still a Priorat, albeit in restrained and delicate guise. It has the brightness and the vivacity typical of Priorat, its sense of energy and thrust allied to a charming, lighter red fruit spectrum. There’s a saline edge too, which may or may not be related to the changed soil type.

About the Producer

When Eben Sadie and Dominik Huber first met in 2001 at Mas Martinet, Eben was a promising and highly-regarded young enologist from South Africa and Dominik, German by birth, was a wine enthusiast with a background in business administration and an interest in the culinary arts. In short order they became fast friends. With the help of the Perez family of Mas Martinet, Eben and Dominik purchased some fruit and leased a little corner in the cellar of Cims de Porrera where they vinified their first vintage of Dits del Terra in 2001. After two years at Cims de Porrera they moved into a tiny cellar in Torroja del Priorat. The move coincided with the first vintage of Arbossar in 2003. In the following years they released additional cuvees: Torroja in 2005, Manyes and Tosses in 2006, Pedra de Guix in 2008 and Terra de Cuques in 2011. Throughout the decade since its founding, Terroir al Limit has evolved in its understanding of the Priorat - coming to view it as a region similar to Burgundy in its complexity and potential to produce elegant and transparent wines.
