Artadi Grandes Añadas Rioja DOCa 1998 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
At the top of the Artadi hierarchy is this limited production cuvees. Grandes Anadas is a majestic, ageworthy Rioja that may well be the single greatest wine made in that appellation. The 1998 Grandes Anades (100% Tempranillo from 70-100-year old vines) has only been made twice in the last seven years, 1994 and 1998. It is tannic and highly extracted, with lots of body. It is a broodingly backward, formidable wine with amazing concentration, purity, and overall balance. Long and concentrated, with a 40-50-second finish, it requires 3-4 years of cellaring and should evolve gracefully for three decades. This is a classic, yet singular expression of Rioja the likes of which can be found nowhere else in that viticultural area.
95 Decanter -
Grandes Añadas, ‘top vintages’, appeared but rarely: 1994, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. It came from a single vineyard, very close to the bodega and, like the 1998 Pagos Viejos, this example is a wine that's coming into itself now. It has a dark, rich and savoury character softened by a layer of superbly juicy, ripe fruit. A rasp of tannin adds structure and refinement. One to enjoy now, and for the next decade.
93+ Vinous -
Full medium ruby. Clean, sharply delineated nose combines bright black raspberry and floral flavors with pain epice and bitter chocolate. Offers wonderful sweetness and thrust; a densely packed wine with terrific structure and verve. Finishes with huge but fine tongue-dusting tannins. Perhaps marginally less rich than the only previous release of this cuvee, the '94, but more harmonious in the middle and sweeter and finer on the back end.

Bottled in the earlier years of the winery. This is a beautiful expression of the terroir and the texture forth hence. After a few years in the cellar, the tannins have settled, but it still shows the density and length of Rioja fine wine.
