Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf du Pape Les Grenaches de Pierre 2014 - First Bottle

Reviews

92-94 Vinous -
Deep red. Expansive spice and mineral-accented red fruit and floral scents are complemented by suggestions of incense and Asian spices. Silky, seamless and alluringly sweet, showing impressive finesse and clarity to the intense raspberry liqueur and lavender pastille flavors. Finishes very long and sappy, with harmonious tannins coming in late and folding smoothly into the lush berry fruit. This sexy wine should by highly appealing soon after release but it also has the depth and balance to age gracefully.
92 Jeb Dunnuck -
Showing nicely, the 2014 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Grenaches De Pierre is another Pinot Noir look-alike offering lots of black raspberry and framboise intermixed with notes of spice, flowers, and a touch of loamy soil. More medium to full-bodied, with sweet tannins, and beautiful balance, it too should be enjoyed over the coming 5-7 years or so.
92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Les Grenaches de Pierre is certainly a success, and like the base cuvée, has a Pinot Noir-like elegance and charm. Black raspberries, framboise, crushed flowers and hints of minerality all flow to a medium to full-bodied Châteauneuf that has sweet tannin, solid mid-palate depth and outstanding length.
90 Wine Spectator -
An alluring, silky-edged style, with raspberry coulis and blood orange pâte de fruit notes, backed by black tea and wood spice accents. The long, refined finish lets a light chalky minerality play out alongside hints of mint.

"After selling wine to negociants for many years, this estate began to estate bottle in 1998. With the assistance of the brilliant Philippe Cambie, the wines have soared in quality, and Domaine Giraud is now one of the more exciting domaines in Châteauneuf du Pape.” - Robert Parker, Jr.

With seriously old vine plots (many of which are over 100 years of age), Domaine Giraud has quickly grown from tending vines to making wine sold almost exclusively to negociants, all the way to where they are today –one of the top houses in all of Châteauneuf. CdP’s master blender Philippe Cambie, who sadly passed away in 2021, was the guiding sage behind these wines, and this collection includes some of his last finished wines. His eternal mastery and vision, when coupled with the family’s knack for farming, and now with the 2nd generation taking on both viticulture and winemaking, make this an all-encompassing estate that will continue to rise to the top in the region.<

Les Gallimardes and Grenaches de Pierre – both tremendous, old vine sites that are only made in the best vintages. All the fruit is fermented and aged in concrete, with the exception of the syrah grapes, which spend time in large oak vats before blending in. These are elegant, charming, and classically powerful wines that are deserving of a spot in any great Rhone collection.

About the Producer

Domaine Giraud is under the stewardship of brother-sister team François and Marie Giraud taking over the primary roles from their mother and father. François handles the vineyards and Marie oversees the winemaking. Committed to organic farming since 2011, the winery continues to make some of the most exciting and forward Grenache dominant Châteauneufs. Named in honor of Pierre Giraud, the semi-retired father of Marie and François, Les Grenaches de Pierre is sourced from 100 year old vines of Grenache planted on sandy soils in the lieux-dits of Pignan, Mourre de Gaud and Charbonnières Est.
