Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf du Pape Les Grenaches de Pierre 2011 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Shockingly good given that it’s 100% Grenache (which struggled in the vintage), the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Grenaches de Pierre comes all from sandy soils in La Crau and Pignan. Aged all in concrete, it’s more focused and concentrated than the Gallimardes, with beautiful minerality, dark fruit, roasted garrigue and assorted Provencal nuances. Serious stuff, with full-bodied richness and chewy tannin, it will have a broad drink window. Count me a fan. Drink 2015-2027. This is a terrific lineup of wines by the brother and sister team of Marie and Francois Giraud. Their 2011s are certainly near the top of the vintage...

Just slightly more impressive, the 2011 Domaine Giraud Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée les Grenaches de Pierre might just be the wine of the vintage. More fresh and poised than the Les Gallimardes, it offers up a mineral-drenched bouquet of black cherry, new leather, spice cake, and licorice to go with a full-bodied, gorgeously textured, and perfectly balanced palate. Very concentrated and rich, especially for a 2011, this beauty should also be relatively approachable on release, yet also has more than enough tannin to keep it drinking well for 12-15+ years.

Made from 100% old vine Grenache, this lush, soft and silky Chateauneuf shows good richness and sensuous textures from start to finish. There is a blast of fresh, cherry and jam in the end note that lingers. This is another star of the vintage.

Opaque ruby. Sexy raspberry and Asian spices on the nose, with notes of lavender and sandalwood adding complexity. Sweet, sappy and expansive, offering intense red and dark berry flavors and velvety texture. Rich and graceful Chateauneuf, finishing with appealingly sweet notes of candied red berries and flowers.

Dark and ripe, this offers plum sauce, blackberry coulis and black currant fruit, carried by dense but silky tannins. Sports some sweet toast on the finish, with an accent of baker's chocolate chiming in. Shows lovely density and a very polished mouthfeel. Should develop with cellaring. Best from 2014 through 2027. 70 cases imported.

"After selling wine to negociants for many years, this estate began to estate bottle in 1998. With the assistance of the brilliant Philippe Cambie, the wines have soared in quality, and Domaine Giraud is now one of the more exciting domaines in Châteauneuf du Pape.” - Robert Parker, Jr.

With seriously old vine plots (many of which are over 100 years of age), Domaine Giraud has quickly grown from tending vines to making wine sold almost exclusively to negociants, all the way to where they are today –one of the top houses in all of Châteauneuf. CdP’s master blender Philippe Cambie, who sadly passed away in 2021, was the guiding sage behind these wines, and this collection includes some of his last finished wines. His eternal mastery and vision, when coupled with the family’s knack for farming, and now with the 2nd generation taking on both viticulture and winemaking, make this an all-encompassing estate that will continue to rise to the top in the region.<

Les Gallimardes and Grenaches de Pierre – both tremendous, old vine sites that are only made in the best vintages. All the fruit is fermented and aged in concrete, with the exception of the syrah grapes, which spend time in large oak vats before blending in. These are elegant, charming, and classically powerful wines that are deserving of a spot in any great Rhone collection.

About the Producer

Domaine Giraud is under the stewardship of brother-sister team François and Marie Giraud taking over the primary roles from their mother and father. François handles the vineyards and Marie oversees the winemaking. Committed to organic farming since 2011, the winery continues to make some of the most exciting and forward Grenache dominant Châteauneufs. Named in honor of Pierre Giraud, the semi-retired father of Marie and François, Les Grenaches de Pierre is sourced from 100 year old vines of Grenache planted on sandy soils in the lieux-dits of Pignan, Mourre de Gaud and Charbonnières Est.
