Lots of redcurrants and roses on the nose, following through to a medium to full body with firm, silky tannins that run the length of the wine. Firm and polished with excellent length. From organically grown grapes. Give this three or four years to soften. Best after 2025.
Clear ruby with a slight purple tinge. Intense and at the same time, a finely marked nose with notes of intense cassis and blackberry and some wild raspberry in the background. Grippy, hearty tannins, develops a strong drive, lots of juicy fruit, long finish.
The 2019 L'Alberello is savory, inviting, and rich with a perfume of graphite, blackberry, black cherry, and polished leather. The wine is structured and long, with fantastic purity, and is ripe with cherry and redcurrant, striking a wonderful balance between energetic freshness and richness. This incredible wine casts a very fashionable light on the Cabernet Franc component, which shines through in the blend. Drink 2024-2040.
“A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Bolgheri Superiore l'Alberello is a special expression of place. The wine is born in a two-hectare plot that is entirely planted to long rows of alberello (bush-trained) vines at a low 30 meters above sea level with predominately clay soils. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel, and the wine ages in barrique for a standard 18 months. This vintage is very generous and broad in terms of aroma and texture, with finely polished tannins. There are in fact two phases to this wine: a creamy start and a silky end. It shows impressive length and polish. With very low yields of one kilo of fruit per plant, that means each vine makes one bottle of wine. Total production is 9,000 bottles.”
The 2019 Bolgheri Superiore L'Alberello is another fabulous wine from Grattamacco. Effusive and light on its feet, the 2019 impresses with its striking balance and poise. Crushed flowers, dark red berry fruit, incense and spice open gradually, but it's the wine's total sense of harmony that carries the day. Silky, polished tannins wrap it all together.
The particularity of Alberello is not only the training system of bush vines ('alberello' in Italian), but also that the grapes - 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc - are co-fermented in oak. Since 2018, Petit Verdot is no longer included in the blend. The wine then matures for 18 to 20 months in casks. It has a dark profile with graphite, whiffs of bell pepper and luscious cassis with fresh leather in depth. Eucalyptus leaf with balsamic amplitude dominate the palate, showing velvety tannins and refreshing acidity. Savoury spices and garrigue unfold in the glass and on the slightly warming finish.

From the same ownership as the iconic Poggio di Sotto (a top Brunello producer), this is Italy’s take on Left Bank Bordeaux...done exquisitely well. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 30% cabernet franc – all from a pristine two-hectare parcel of clay soils, where the vines are planted in the “alberro” style – bush-style, head-trained vines more commonly seen in the Rhone Valley, or with old vineyards of zinfandel in California. Crazy low yields augment the wine’s concentration – with an expected one kilo of fruit PER VINE – these are some of the lowest yields you will find anywhere!

About the Producer
Established in 1977 and later purchased by the Tipa Bertarelli Family in 2002, Grattamacco was one of the first two wineries in Bolgheri. This region is typically recognized for its Cabernet and Merlot wines, but Grattamacco differentiates itself by incorporating 15% Sangiovese in its winemaking process to impart elegance and quality in its wines. Grattamacco was not only the first winery in Bolgheri to use Sangiovese due to its favorable high altitude location, despite its proximity to the coast, but it was also the first to plant Vermentino. Grattamacco's wines are known for their power, elegance, and complex flavor profiles that only improve with age.
