Bodegas Mazas Roble Toro 2020 - First Bottle

Reviews

97 Decanter World Wine Awards -
We haven't welcomed Toro to our Best In Show selection in the past, but the sheer power and exuberance of its celebrated Tempranillo strain (Tinta de Toro) has often attracted our judges' attention as we hunt down silvers and golds. This wine puts all of that generosity into the glass, but does so at a price that qualifies for a Value Best In Show: a combination that's hard to resist. It has been oaked, but not with the wild exuberance of some of its pricier peers: look for damson and bramble fruits to come singing out of a glass of this dark, almost-black wine. Like most Toro, it’s gratifyingly soft in the mouth but texturally rich for all that: creamy and coaxing. It's hard not to sprawl and wallow in all of that luscious damson and bramble darkness, but soft, discreet acidity combines with the plush tannins to stop the wine cloying.

This fantastic 97 POINT Spanish red is made with Tinto de Toro – a unique Spanish clone of tempranillo prized in the Toro region, plus 10% garnacha. Taking home Decanter World Wine Awards’ “Best in Show” in 2022, this wine is an incredible value...and we’re the only ones in the country to have it!

Bodegas Mazas is a relatively new winery that specializes in some seriously old vines. The estate includes four different vineyards throughout the Toro region of Castilla y Leon, two of which are over 80 years old (with the other two over 50 years old). All told, the vineyards comprise a total of 140 hectares, though they only make their own wines from a small selection of the best of the best of those old vine parcels.

Due to the region's incredibly low precipitation – the vines are constantly struggling in the poor soils and extreme temperature shifts. The vines are spread quite far apart to alleviate their stress, and yields are very low. This naturally concentrates the color and flavors in the fruit, and does it ever show in the final product! Inky, virtually black in color, this is a wine of serious weight and substance. The aromas are all about deep, ripe cherries, with whiffs of toasty french oak and soft vanilla bean – well-matched on the palate with the addition of black plums, kirsch, and fresh tobacco leaf. The wine is decadently smooth and velvety, with an uplifting, slightly minty finish. Simply a pleasure to sip, and plenty going on – especially when you consider the price! 97 points! Only $21.95...this is a steal that is sure to disappear quickly. Grab yours while it lasts!

PAIRING IDEAS: You simply can’t go wrong with Tinto de Toro and Lamb...and this Spanish Lamb Stew is proof! Smokey pimenton, a kiss of sherry, and creamy white beans...this will become a monthly staple at your table
