Domaine Le Prieure des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape Le Couchant 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

94+ Jeb Dunnuck -
Even better, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Le Couchant, which includes a good chunk of Mourvèdre, offers more structure and depth, with perfumed red and black fruits, tobacco, earth, game, and peppery nuances. I love its overall balance, it has silky tannins, medium to full-bodied richness, and just loads to love. Drink it over the coming 15 years or more.

Led by one of the top wine professionals in the world, Antoine Petrus, this “new” estate is one to watch! If you remember long-time favorite Domaine La Millière, you’ll be excited for the future of this new top estate – with access to some of CdP’s most spectacular old vine plots!

Domaine le Prieure des Papes, if you’ve never heard of them...it’s because they’re brand new. But they’re also ancient. Remember Domaine La Millière? The spectacular, old-vine-loving Arnaud family, a jewel of a producer that you dedicated First Bottlers have been gobbling up for years?!?!

Welp, the estate, the facilities, and most importantly, those extra special, seriously ancient vines (up to 130 years old!) are now Domaine le Prieure des Papes. Organic. Bio-dynamic. Off-the-hook delicious. SAVORY, complex, layered, and packed with flavor. It does all this with BALANCE and vibrancy. 94+ points, 50% off when you order 6 or more bottles!

2019 vintage Châteauneuf was an all-time great one, and these old vines (mostly grenache, with a solid hunk of mourvedre) are showcasing a brilliant and pure character that is completely unadorned. No new oak, all concrete fermentations, with the concentration distilled purely from the vines and grapes themselves. This is a powerfully intense, and weighty bottle of old-school CdP greatness just exploding with the essence of kirsch, raspberries, blackberries, and spiced mulberries, with lavender and white pepper, and freshly dug earth – all with deeply satisfying sweet herbs, fresh pipe tobacco, and almost Burgundian mouthfeel. Not a heavy wine, but youthful and powerful and utterly vibrant. Keep it around for a decade plus, too!! This is a first effort that leaves us trembling with excitement for what's to come with one of our long-standing favorite Rhone properties. This is one of their two single-vineyard bottlings, and we can’t wait to share them both with you!

About the Producer

Previously known as Domaine La Milliere: "Previously known as Domaine La Millière, Domaine le Prieure des Papes is now under the helm of France’s superstar sommelier, Antoine Petrus, who in addition to managing this estate, is in charge of Domaine de Coyeux in Beaumes de Venise and is a partner in the restaurant La Mère Germaine, located in the heart of Châteauneuf du Pape. The 2019s are rock solid, but I have no doubt the best is yet to come from this estate."
