Gordenker Cabernet Sauvignon Sylvia Drive Moon Mountain 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Medium to deep ruby-purple, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Sylvia Drive Vineyard opens with classic aromas of cassis and chocolate-covered cherries with a minerally vein, plus aromas of redcurrant, warm earth, charcuterie, cedar, cigar and exotic spices. The medium to full-bodied palate is elegant and restrained, with a plush frame and great freshness, finishing long and minerally. This is drinking well now but will age well. 150 cases produced.

Gordenker is a micro-production from a long-standing Sonoma farming family that goes back to the 1800s. Moon Mountain cabernet sauvignon from the family estate in the glorious 2016 vintage, made by Michele and Tom Gendall, 93 POINTS from Wine Advocate, all this and more...for OVER 60% OFF! Let’s do this!

The Gordenker family are long-time turkey farmers, who caught the wine bug and planted their Moon Mountain hillside to 13 acres of vines in 1998. After selling off the fruit for the first few harvests, they brought in Michele and Tom Gendall (Tom is the winemaker at the iconic Cline Vineyards) to keep some fruit and start the Gordenker label. 2012 was their first vintage, but now, a few years in, they are really showing the potential of this property and these spectacular wines!

This is a structured, mountainous expression of Sonoma cabernet sauvignon from a Nun’s Canyon site that is often the very last vineyard picked in all of Sonoma. The nutrient-barren volcanic soils and cool, high-elevation micro-climate lend an extended hang-time for the fruit, so slow, even ripening perfectly balances ripe fruit flavors with structure-providing acidity and depth. The wine is bold and full, with aromas and flavors of red currants, boysenberries, cherries, crème de cassis, plus earthy cigar box spices, Herbs de Provence, and mineral notes of iron ore and graphite. The finish is bright, fresh, and structured, showing brilliantly now, at six years in. Only 150 cases were made of this rare creature, and we grabbed all we could! A Cali-cabernet, of this quality and complexity, for under $50 is a rarity, and this is certainly one to add to your list! Over 60% OFF?! It's almost too good to be true.

About the Producer

Gordenker is a small producer with limited distribution and, frankly, a perfect fit for First Bottle. The Gordenkers have been in the turkey business, that's right, Turkey's, since WW2. Throughout the years, they've purchased 26 acres in Sonoma with Turkey's roaming free, and in 1990 they planted their first Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The turkey business is now behind them, but the wine business has a long future ahead. They're nested in the Moon Mountain AVA of Sonoma Valley and craft delicate, mouth-watering, and lifted wines. Not to miss!
