Domaine Clos Frantin (Albert Bichot) Echezeaux 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

95 Wine Enthusiast -
Tentative hints of red currant and red cherry escape from this wine's shy nose. The palate adds hints of flinty reduction as well as subtle creaminess that cushions the firm stucture. Wonderful freshness highlights fine-boned tannins that are firm and filigreed in equal measure. A concentrated core radiates red-berry tartness and aroma heightened by the freshness of this svelte but well-cut wine.
93 Wine Spectator -
A densely packed, fruity style, this boasts macerated cherry, raspberry, vanilla and toast flavors. It feels balanced for the most part, with chalky tannins lining the finish that should integrate in a year or two. Vibrant and long. Best from 2023 through 2038. 300 cases made, 97 cases imported.
91-93 Burghound -
A more restrained nose features equally spicy and more floral-infused aromas that also evidence a trace of volatile acidity. The exceptionally rich and full-bodied flavors possess very good power and muscle while the copious sap coats the palate on the firm, saline, very compact and built-to-age finale.

5 cases. That’s all we got. Albert Bichot’s Domaine Clos Frantin Echezeaux from the marvelous 2018 vintage at the best price in the states. Do what you must; this won’t be around for long!

The Bichot family has roots in Burgundy since the 14th century. And yet, it is really over the past 40 years that the Bichot family has become recognized for producing top-notch Burgundy wines from the best vineyard sites. Much of that change coincides with the ascent of Albert Bichot within the company. He led the charge on enhancing the fruit – whether by applying better practices to the vineyards they already had a relationship with or by pursuing new holdings in better locations – and then revamping the production side of things. With him in charge since the mid-90s, Clos Frantin has skyrocketed in quality and reputation.

But this is Echezeaux, good people, and needs no introduction! Founded by the monks of the abbey of Cîteaux between the 12th and 13th centuries, this singular plot divides the iconic Clos de Vougeot vineyard from the Vosne-Romanée Premiers Crus vineyards. The terroir makeup is a complex mosaic of bajocien marl, yellow marl, and a pebbly overlay of red alluvium, situated on a slope facing to the east. Wines here are revered for their powerful structure, with full and round fruit flavors, and rustic, earthy, and gamey accents. This offering abounds with delicate floral aromas, punctuated with red berries of cherry, raspberry, and currant. Warm baking spices of vanilla and cinnamon complement the toastiness of the aromas, adding depth to the high-toned and austere profile of this young wine. The finish is deeply structured, with salty air, hints of new leather, and compact spice profile. This will morph beautifully in the glass over time and more still in your cellar over the next decade! Super-limited, and Echezeaux always manages to find a willing home...especially when offered at the best price in the U.S.!!!

About the Producer

The first traces of the Bichot family date back to 1214. They settled in Burgundy in 1350. Alberic Bichot joined the company in the early 90s and took over its management in 1996. Convinced that the quality of wine depends on the quality of the grapes, he has focused on developing the upstream control that was undertaken in the 1980s. He secured supplies, and began to expand the vinification capacity and the aging cellars in 2010. The company's vineyards now total 6 estates that cover Burgundy from north to south.
