Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

93 Jeb Dunnuck -
Moving to the reds and 85% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvedre, the base 2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a beauty and boasts appealing notes of spiced red and black fruits, cedar, and garrigue. Full-bodied, ripe and undeniably sexy, it?s going to benefit from a year or three in the cellar and drink nicely for over a decade.
92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The lush, fruit-forward 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape is a good introduction to the domaine's Grenache-dominated style, boasting copious amounts of cherry and apricot fruit. It's full-bodied and velvety in texture, with attractive hints of licorice emerging on the long finish. With its slightly more prominent acidity, it should drink well for longer than the 2015 or 2017 versions.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
“Full-bodied, ripe and undeniably sexy…” --JD.

CSJ is a rockstar year in/year out, and when the base wine is priced like this...well, best to LOAD UP, back up the truck, and drink to your heart’s content over the next 5 years or so! (That is our plan)

Fun fact: Did you know CSJ collaborates with Sine Qua Non’s Manfred Krankl on a super-rare wine called Chimere? Superstar Rhone consultant Philippe Cambie is the driving force here, and the wines are ALWAYS so polished, generous and lip-smackingly good, sexy, and silky. This wine has a very nice 92.4 average score on Cellartracker as well, worth noting we think.

Did we mention $239.70 a 6-pack delivered? $479.40 a 12-pack case! Case me!

About the Producer

Clos Saint-Jean farms 100 acres in southern Chateauneuf du Pape and is run by brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel, with consulting help from Philippe Cambie. Releasing 5 Chateauneufs in top vintages, they also produce a wine in collaboration with Sine Qua Non in California's Santa Barbara County, and release another high-end collaboration from Chateauneuf called Chimere. While the winemaking here is often labeled as modern, it is actually relatively traditional, with the Grenache almost always aged in tank and only the Mourvedre and Syrah seeing time in larger, 500-600 liter oak barrels, or demi-muids.
