Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot le Grand Maupertuis Grand Cru 2020 - First Bottle

Reviews

92-94 Vinous -
The 2020 Clos de Vougeot le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru has an intense, quite penetrating bouquet with copious black cherry and cassis scents interwoven with rose petal and violet aromas. The palate is quite dense and multi-layered with dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and bay leaf that builds towards quite a backward finish that will requite 8-10 years to reach its drinking window. A lot of wine in this Clos Vougeot.
96 Decanter -
As always, this is a knock-out. Produced from the 80-year-old vines in the Grand Maupertuis section of the clos, this is perennially at the top of my list in the Clos de Vougeot. Aged in one-third new casks using barrels from Damy, François Frères and Ermitage-Berthomieu, the result is balanced and elegant, with a well-integrated smoky, spicy character, and impressive of purity of fruit that lasts through the lingering finish. Drinking Window: 2025 - 2050.

Ultra-limited and first come, first served! Anne Gros took over her father’s winery (Domaine François Gros) in the late 1980s, and today, she is quite simply one of the top winemakers in Burgundy, with a cult-like following. We are seriously blessed today with a beautiful allocation of the newest releases from one of the finest vintages I have tasted, including the rare Richebourg, two of the collectible Le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru (what we will call the “filet mignon” of the large Clos Vougeot vineyard), and the high-scoring, terrifically complex, and layered Echezeaux. For fans of Gros (and they are legion), this should make your heart race! Click quick, these are going to go fast!

About the Producer

Anne Gros took over her families winery in the late 1980's but their family lineage spans all the way back to 1830's. The land holdings have been split among the family members for many generations, totaling four separate wineries connected to the Gros family. What started off as 3 ha has turned into 6.5 ha across nine appellations including some very prestigious Grand Cru vineyards. As a woman winegrower, Anne knew how to prove herself and convince all who doubted of her ability to manage a domaine. She showed that she had not only the muscle but also the brains to make her family domaine one of the greatest domaines of Burgundy. The Echzeauc Grand Cru bottles comes from 29 year old vines in the liu dit Les Loachausses.
