Domaine Marguerite Carillon Pommard 2019
Pinot Noir | France
$49.95 $150.00 - 750mL
In the heart of the Côte de Beaune, the village of Pommard is nestled on a slope surrounded by vineyards. There, the clay and limestone soils are topped with gravelly, broken rock debris that allows for quick draining and increased vine stress. The resulting wine is a lustrous deep red, with all of the classic Pommard power and structure that has become synonymous with the region since the Middle Ages. But even in the exceptionally ripe and dense vintage of 2019, this wine does not stop with sheer brute strength. A beautiful minerality runs throughout the wine, and coupled with the wine’s lively acidity, lifts the wine to an elegant and floral finish. This Pommard is built to last, with a decade of prime drinking, at the least, to come.
2019 is an EPIC vintage for red Burgundy, and especially Pommard. The buzz in Beaune (and beyond) is that this is a vintage that will be revered and compared against for generations. Bernard Hervet, the legend and former director of both Domaine Faiveley and Domaine Bouchard went so far as to say 2019 would "perhaps rival 1865, the greatest vintage of all". So, yeah, we're pretty stoked about this. This wine hits the glass and immediately resonates with Pommard's signature notes of dark berries, cherries and plum. Background notes that rise over time and air include saddle leather, black pepper and silky dark chocolate. The wine is particularly structured for a red Burgundy, making it the perfect complement to furred and feathered game meats, and well-suited to hearty braised dishes equally concentrated in their flavors. This is an intensely flavored and densely layered Burgundy at any price point, but for the price we have today, it is, frankly, astounding.
As to the wine's creation, hand harvested grapes and optically sorted and destemmed. The vinification occurs in thermo-regulated stainless steel with a cold soak prior to a long fermentation with daily punchdowns and pumpovers. Post-fermentation the wine macerates on the skins at 30°C for 5 days before aging in 40% new oak barrels for the next 8 to 12 months. A modern-style for Burgundy, utilizing state of the art technology to maximize the quality of these beautiful wines. This is a spectacular Pommard at a price you can’t afford to ignore! We don’t have as much of this as we’d like, so secure yours straight away!
PAIRING IDEAS: The power of this Pommard will stand up perfectly to braised beef. Try something new with this authentic Malaysian staple Beef Rendang!
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Taking things in an EPIC direction with this gem from The Last of the Mohicans – a good film made great by its perfect score. “Elk Hunt” sets the tone.

Wine Enthusiast
A smartly balanced wine from an exceptionally ripe vintage, this powerful Pinot Noir offers layers of rich, pulsating black-cherry and plum flavors framed by a salty, stony mineral core. It's a voluminous wine yet brilliantly fresh on the midpalate, lifted by acidity and a perfumed kiss of violets and cherry blossoms. Just reaching its stride now, the wine should improve through 2029 and hold a bit further.
