Mazzei Siepi Toscana IGT 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

99 Vinous -
The 2019 Siepi continues a trend toward greater finesse and nuance in this wine. Creme de cassis, lavender, spice, licorice and plum meld together effortlessly in the glass. Dense and layered, with striking detail, the 2019 is so impressive. The flavors are bright, bold and punchy. An exceptionally beautiful and riveting wine, the 2019 is rich and concentrated, but not at all heavy. What a total knock-out.
98 James Suckling -
This is a really racy and fine Siepi with currant, black-cherry and dark-chocolate character. It’s medium-to full-bodied with very long, intense tannins that are linear and fine-textured. Really builds on the palate. Super structure. Finesse with power.
98 Falstaff -
Rich, deep dark ruby ??with violet shimmer. Very appealing and dense nose, rich notes of blackberries, blueberries, some black truffle, spicy Macchia herbs, lots of cassis. Lots of plump and juicy fruit on the palate, very present, blackberries and cassis, unfolds with fine-meshed, almost silky tannins, firm pressure and fine resinous notes in the finish.
96 Wine Spectator -
Perfumed and elegant, this red features vibrant cherry, black currant and blackberry flavors allied to a supple texture. Offers mineral, tobacco, wild herb and spice accents that add detail, with lively acidity keeping it all defined and persistent. Harmonious, with excellent finesse and a long aftertaste. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2025 through 2043. 2,917 cases made, 250 cases imported.
96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Now on the market, the Mazzei 2019 Siepi is a special achievement and a delight to taste at the exciting conclusion of this historic retrospective spanning 26 vintages. This edition of Marchesi Mazzei's celebrated blend of Merlot and Sangiovese benefited from ideal growing conditions, with warm days and cool nights throughout the summer season. The clusters were healthy and full. The fruit is crisp and fresh, and the tannins serve to softly support the wine's generous texture and fiber. The 2019 vintage also achieves balance with a pretty assembly of dark fruit, mineral and spice aromas. Production is 35,000 bottles.
96 Decanter -
This has the same owner, location and team as Concerto - the Mazzei family who founded the estate in 1435 but this is a 50/50 blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. Power and seduction straight away on the nose, this smells intensely of black cherries and blueberries. The palate is juicy and instantly mouthwatering giving an abundance of succulent red berries and a touch of herbal spice on the finish. This is excellent quality, I adore it. Smooth and silky with purity and energy. Really shines in the glass - drinking well now but will also age. The second vintage on the Place for Siepi since its debut last year.

99, double 98’s, triple 96’s – the top wine critics in the world have made it abundantly clear where they stand on this wine... and, we must say, they are dead on. Of the 250 total cases set aside for import to the USA, we pulled every ace we’ve got to get 15 cases. It’s not enough. Hot damn, this wine is spectacular. One of the greatest Super Tuscans to pass my lips in over two decades working in food and wine.

Creme de cassis, elderberry, black cherry, and plum - decadent without being heady. Lavender, licorice, and tobacco - without coming across as herbaceous. Structure, tannins, and acid for days - while still maintaining a pure and easy elegance. This 50% sangiovese and 50% merlot blend is a wine in complete harmony.

Grown on predominantly Alberese soils (weathered sandstone with a high proportion of limestone), this south by southeast hillside exposure is planted to both sangiovese and merlot, the latter added in the early 1980s. The topsoil at Siepi is tumbled and broken Alberese marl and chalky sandstone that compacts to a solid layer about 5 feet deep. This ensures excellent drainage for the soil, while a sublayer of Pliocenic clay traps the water run-off and provides a safety net for the vines in the drier years. Vine age is 21-34 years.

The wine is nurtured through a stainless steel fermentation, with a total maceration of 2-3 weeks. At this point, the wine is aged for 18 months in 70% new French oak barrels (barriques for the merlot and tonneaux for the sangiovese), before racking and blending into concrete tanks for an additional 4 months of settling. Drink now with aid of a decanter, or anytime over the next twenty years. Or better still, grab a couple 750s to get a sense of the wine and your personal sweet spot, and keep a magnum for that one, very special occasion years from now!

PAIRING IDEAS: A wine like this calls for a proper feast! Start with a bit of antipasto, moving into a primi of Tortelli alla Maremma (large raviolis stuffed with ricotta and spinach), culminating in a grand second of Peposa Dell'Impruneta (Tuscan Black Pepper Beef) served atop creamy polenta. Mangia!

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: What begins as melodic rhythm and chorus turns on a dime to a rocking ballad of beautiful noise by The Who with “Behind Blue Eyes”!

About the Producer

Castello di Fonterutoli is an estate in Chianti Classico that has been owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, covering 26 generations. The Siepi vineyard is also one of the oldest vineyards in Italy, with the first recording of its existence in 1435. Sangiovese finds itself at home at these vineyards with varying altitudes and rocky limestone and sandstone soils.
