Mazzei Siepi Toscana IGT 2019
99, double 98’s, triple 96’s – the top wine critics in the world have made it abundantly clear where they stand on this wine... and, we must say, they are dead on. Of the 250 total cases set aside for import to the USA, we pulled every ace we’ve got to get 15 cases. It’s not enough. Hot damn, this wine is spectacular. One of the greatest Super Tuscans to pass my lips in over two decades working in food and wine.
Creme de cassis, elderberry, black cherry, and plum - decadent without being heady. Lavender, licorice, and tobacco - without coming across as herbaceous. Structure, tannins, and acid for days - while still maintaining a pure and easy elegance. This 50% sangiovese and 50% merlot blend is a wine in complete harmony.
Grown on predominantly Alberese soils (weathered sandstone with a high proportion of limestone), this south by southeast hillside exposure is planted to both sangiovese and merlot, the latter added in the early 1980s. The topsoil at Siepi is tumbled and broken Alberese marl and chalky sandstone that compacts to a solid layer about 5 feet deep. This ensures excellent drainage for the soil, while a sublayer of Pliocenic clay traps the water run-off and provides a safety net for the vines in the drier years. Vine age is 21-34 years.
The wine is nurtured through a stainless steel fermentation, with a total maceration of 2-3 weeks. At this point, the wine is aged for 18 months in 70% new French oak barrels (barriques for the merlot and tonneaux for the sangiovese), before racking and blending into concrete tanks for an additional 4 months of settling. Drink now with aid of a decanter, or anytime over the next twenty years. Or better still, grab a couple 750s to get a sense of the wine and your personal sweet spot, and keep a magnum for that one, very special occasion years from now!
PAIRING IDEAS: A wine like this calls for a proper feast! Start with a bit of antipasto, moving into a primi of Tortelli alla Maremma (large raviolis stuffed with ricotta and spinach), culminating in a grand second of Peposa Dell'Impruneta (Tuscan Black Pepper Beef) served atop creamy polenta. Mangia!
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: What begins as melodic rhythm and chorus turns on a dime to a rocking ballad of beautiful noise by The Who with “Behind Blue Eyes”!
