Yarra Yering Dry Red Wine No 2 Yarra Valley 2010
Syrah Blend | Australia
$49.95
The eagle has landed! Yarra Yering is the pioneering winery in Australia’s Yarra Valley. This is cool-climate Australian wine at its very best and most ageworthy. A longtime sommelier favorite and a true icon of this cooler stretch of land surrounding the Yarra River in Victoria. Their portfolio is a consistent critical darling, and the demand for these wines is off the charts. At this price, are you kidding me? How do we do it? (That’s like asking a CIA spook how he amassed his Cuban cigar collection – just keep quiet and enjoy the goods.)
Dry Red Wine No 2 is a unique blend consisting mostly of estate-grown shiraz (95%), with small portions of viognier, marsanne and mataro. Think of it as a sort of Australian riff on an old-school Cote-Rotie. Just over a decade in bottle has this wine peaking in all the right places – dark chocolate, sandalwood, creme de cassis, black tea, charcoal, soy, and blueberry. Savory and extremely complex with wonderful worn leather and cigar box nuances on top of macerated black cherry and all spice flavors. Every time you revisit the glass, you get something new to discover. The freshness here is what makes this wine so special - it's still kicking hard after 12 years with vibrant acidity, and our guess is, it will be drinking great for another 7 to 10 years.
Only 800 cases were ever made, and only 60 cases made it stateside. We bought every last bottle, and we assure you it is not enough. Be sure to add this icon to your collection!
PAIRING IDEAS: Take this wine to even greater, oxygen-depleting heights with Zov’s Rosemary-Crusted Rack of Lamb with Pomegranate Sauce.
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Wine speaks to us... sometimes we feel compelled to speak back. To this wine, I’m singing along with INXS’s “Need You Tonight”.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Dry Red Wine No. 2 is blend of estate grown Shiraz, Viognier, Marsanne and Mataro. The 2010 Dry Red Wine No. 2 reveals a medium-deep garnet-purple color and fragrant notes of mulberries, spiced blackberries and black cherries with nuances of violets, peach blossoms and incense. Full-bodied and opulently fruited in the mouth, it has a firm level of velvety tannins, refreshing acid and a very long, spicy finish.
Wine Spectator
Fresh and vital, open and appealing, offering a cascade of cherry, plum, coffee and dark chocolate flavors that come together harmoniously as the finish lingers with elegance. Shiraz, Mataro, Viognier and Marsanne. Drink now through 2020. 800 cases made, 64 cases imported.
Wine Enthusiast
After 21 months in 50% new French oak and a few years in bottle, this Shiraz (it contains traces of Mataro, Viognier and Marsanne) is dominated on the nose by graham crackers and vanilla. The fruit surges forward on the palate, bringing plummy, meaty flavors to the fore. This is fuller bodied than most Yarra Valley Shirazes, with a plush mouthfeel and a long, warm, spicy finish.
