Marchesi Antinori Solaia Toscana 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

97 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The Marchesi Antinori 2018 Solaia reveals a silky and elegant personality, and the wine steps away from some of the more robust fruit weight and dark concentration that we've seen in the past. This elegant vintage prizes fruit purity and focus with black plum, cassis, blue flower, pencil shaving and lots of sweet spice from the oak that recalls clove and toasted almond. The blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parts Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. The fruit is harvested at the Antinori family's Tenuta Tignanello at the heart of the Chianti Classico appellation. The percentage of Cabernet Franc used in the blend is the ultimate Solaia wild card. In this vintage, the Franc has been increased to 7%, and that number is expected to be even higher in 2019 as the vines get older and the fruit more complex.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

Perhaps the most historic producer in all of Italy, the Antinori family has made wine in the picturesque rolling hills of Tuscany for nearly 700 years. Solaia is the family’s “Super-Tuscan” offering, with the 2018 vintage comprised of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 7% Cabernet Franc. The fruits hails from the sunniest and most exposed part of the legendary hillside of Tignanello, tucked in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. In spite of this, the 2018 vintage is exceptionally silky and decidedly elegant—showcasing an approachability not often found in such young expressions of this wine.

Taste sun-ripened black plum, sweet and heady crème de cassis, with complements of fresh lavender, shaved graphite, crushed mint, and spicy clove. Aromas of white pepper and cherry blossoms lighten the concentrated scent of roasted coffee bean. Despite the wine’s eagerness to impress, and impress it does, the underlying structure, consistent acidity and overall intensity of the wine speak to a long and beautiful life ahead of it.

About the Producer

The Antinori family of Florence, one of the world's oldest and most distinguished wine producers, has lived in Tuscany since the 14th century and celebrated its 635th anniversary as wine makers in 2020. The current company president, Marchese Piero Antinori, believes in the tradition that the primary role of wine is to accompany food and enhance the dining experience. In Florence, the Antinori family has led a "Renaissance" in Italian wine making by combining long traditions, a love of authenticity and a dynamic innovative spirit. From the sunniest part of the Tignanello hill comes the Solaia Toscana IGT. Solaia, along with Tignanello, have been defined as "the most influential wines in the history of Italian viticulture." According to Marchesi Antinori, Solaia is an ongoing challenge and a never ending passion.
