Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine Pernand-Vergelesses Rouge Clos Berthet Monopole 2018
Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine has remained a fixture of the Côte de Beaune since the late 1800s. The estate possesses 20 hectares of prime vineyards within Corton as well as the nearby villages of Beaune, Volnay, Pommard and their home estate here, in the medieval town of Pernand-Vergelesses. “Clos Berthet” is the monopole where they make this wine, plus a 1er Cru chardonnay. Fifth-generation vintner, Christine Gruere-Dubreuil, calls this wine her “Mini-Corton” and we can’t disagree. From the delicate aromas of strawberries and bergamot tea, to the underriding current of earthy, mineral tones, and the culminating finish that is both fruit-forward and silky smooth – this wine has all the notes we so love about Red Burgundies, at a price that defies all logic and reason.
Christine, a recent recipient of the prestigious "Les Femmes aux Commandes" award from one of France’s leading Burgundy publications, Bourgogne Aujourd'Hui, has transformed and modernized the estate since taking over from her father, Bernard. With a focus on initial sorting during harvest, to full-destemming and additional sorting in the winery, Christine has also transitioned to stainless steel fermentations and less-frequent punchdowns to achieve fiercely energetic and highly polished wines with alluring textures.
One of the best deals in Burgundy to be had anywhere, because that is what we here at First Bottle do!
PAIRING IDEAS: While Beef Bourguignon and Coq au Vin would absolutely work... well, that’s a little too “vanilla” for our tastes. Live a little and try this with some Panang Curry Beef from your favorite Thai restaurant, or just make it yourself, here.
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: It’s Monday, which means you’re likely already planning on how to get out of work this Friday and enjoy a nice, long weekend. Take some inspiration from one of the funniest songs of all-time, “The Sick Note” by The Dubliners.
