Glaetzer Anaperenna Barossa Valley 2018
Syrah Blends | Australia
$49.95 $125.00 - 750mL
What a blockbuster buy. Wow! We like to think we’re extra-picky when it comes to Barossa wines (there’s a lot of mint-bombs out there), and Glaetzer’s high-end wines (he’s legendary for the collectible Amon-Ra, of course) hit ALL our buttons. This price is, honestly, just head-spinning, like the wine itself.
This is a relatively rare and highly sought-after gem from the fabled Glaetzer family in the Barossa Valley. They can trace their roots to the early days of Australia’s wine industry, getting their start in the late 1800s. Like Australia herself, this gorgeous concoction is bold, majestic and not for the faint of heart. At the jaw-dropping price of $49.95, this is a must have for your collection.
Much like the 2018s here in Napa, the Barossa Valley produced truly epic wines across the vintage. A warm year with even ripeness, ensured that shiraz and cabernet sauvignon thrived to produce rich, complex wines. Aromas of crushed violets with black and blue berries abound, matched by flavors of black currant, rosemary and aromatic cedar. The wine is full, yet supple - a wine to be enjoyed now and for the years to come, but pretty much irresistible for its boundless energy right now – we still can’t believe the price!
PAIRING IDEAS: For such a gutsy, rich, exuberant wine, go with a big hedonistic burger. Step it up a bit and do a lamb burger, drizzled with a bit of tzatziki and crumbled feta.
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: The Seahorses' “Love Is The Law” is a great little indie hit from the 90s.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
For the 2018 Anaperenna Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon, Glaetzer blended in 18% Cabernet Sauvignon to give the wine increased fragrance and length. The nose is smoky, slightly herbal and marked by sweet cedar- and vanilla-tinged oak, but it also offers great cassis and blackberry fruit. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, the flavors are kept nicely in check by fine-grained tannins. This wine has it all: terrific intensity, complexity, length and texture.
James Halliday
82% shiraz (30-100yo vines), 18% cabernet sauvignon (30-130yo vines) yielding 2.5t/ha, open-fermented, hand-plunged, matured for 16 months in new hogsheads (92% French, 8% American). Full-bodied, plum blackberry, supple tannin, good oak. Easy to argue this is too cheap.
James Suckling
The 2018 vintage has delivered such strong quality in these full-bodied reds from the Barossa. This has all the ripeness with vitality, depth and freshness. Aromas of blackberries and blackcurrants, as well as leaves and violets, lead to a very deep, dense and juicy palate that carries such luscious, black and blue-fruit flavors. Very drinkable now, but better from 2024.
