Raymond Usseglio Cuvee Imperiale Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2019
Rhone Blends | France
$69.95 $95.00 - 750mL
Did you know? The Usseglios are of Italian descent, having moved to the Chateauneuf region in 1931. With 18 hectares of vines, half near the ruins of the new castle of the Pope and half in La Crau, they are one of the most respected and coveted producers in the entire region.
Now, to 2019. The best since 2016, it is going to be one of the finest EVER – aficionados and collectors should put this vintage at the very top of their lists. With perfect weather, no mildew or hail to speak of, and a warm and dry summer, the new Cuvée Impériale literally embodies everything we love about Chateauneuf - ripeness, purity, balance, and even a sense of elegance missing in some lesser vintages. BIODYNAMIC. Organic. 95% grenache, from 100+ year vines. So pure, refined, generous and complex...it's just...awesome!

PAIRING IDEAS: We’ll be spending all day Saturday brining St. Louis pork ribs, then seasoning, then drying, then grilling to a good char, THEN smoking for 2-3 hours (it’s a reverse style, going to try it out for you), then serving it with a Caesar salad with TONS of parmesan and grilled bread!
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Listen to classic French songs while drinking this classic CdP! "La Vie en Rose", "La Mer"...whatever your jam is!

Coming all from very old vine Grenache and brought up in tank, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Imperiale offers a smoking bouquet of vivid black raspberry and cassis intermixed with lots of flowery incense, licorice, and spring flowers. Reminding me of a Grand Cru Red Burgundy on the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, has a vibrant, tight, focused texture, polished tannins, and beautifully integrated acidity. It’s one classy Châteauneuf du Pape that will evolve for two decades.
Jeff Leve, Wine Cellar Insider
Deep, rich, dark and packed with notes of roses, kirsch, cherries, spice and thyme, this is stunning from start to finish. While the wine is intense, concentrated and lusty with its 15% alcohol, there is no sense of heat as all that gorgeous, fresh, sweet, ripe, pure fruit grabs your nose and palate from the start and stays with you all the way through to its seamless finish. The wine is produced from mostly old vine Grenache vines close to 120 years of age and with the 2019, the old-vine intensity shines through here, loud and clear. Drink from 2024-2040

Deep, spicy and fragrant, this is a very concentrated and elegant Chateauneuf-du-Pape with remarkably fine tannins and floral delicacy alongside its earthy primacy. Mainly produced from grenache vines planted in 1901 and 1902. From Demeter-certified biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
Vinous
Saturated magenta. Highly perfumed raspberry and cherry liqueur, exotic spice, incense and potpourri aromas are complicated by hints of musky herbs and smoky minerals. Juicy, seamless and energetic on the palate, offering pliant red berry, cherry cola, allspice and lavender flavors that show superb definition and back-end lift. Polished, even tannins lend grip to a strikingly long, penetrating finish that echoes the floral and mineral notes. These vines were reportedly planted in 1901 and 1902.
