AXR Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

95 Wine Enthusiast -
Refined in rich red fruit, savory spice and bolts of black pepper, this lovely appellation wine shows a roundedness and length—the tannins sweet and well integrated. Dark-plum, cherry and mocha flavors layer atop the smooth texture, providing tremendous quality and complexity for the price.

As many of you know by now, Jean has made so many 95-100 point wines over a relatively short period of time it staggers the mind. Although AXR is a relatively new winery, it pays homage to the rich history of this area. The fledgling Napa Valley wine industry was just getting off the ground in the late 1800s. The original winery on-site was a successful lodge was in operation in the 1920s 1930s, operated by a Hungarian family. This lodge was called “The Madrone’s”, named after the plethora of Madrone trees scattered around the property. It is a beautiful spot just north of St. Helena...if you’re ever in our little Valley...go visit! Today, AXR is a partnership between four individuals (referred to as the FAB 4), including winemaker Jean Hoefliger, Don Van Laeken, Kelly Trevethan, and Mark Schratz.

But back to the lushness, the savory goodness here. Pure rivers of blackberry, dark cocoa, sweep plums, cedar, all wrapped in velvety soft tannins…honestly, it’s just a classic “modern” styled Napa cabernet for any serious enthusiast and an easy go-to at our superb price. Don't let this 95-pointer slip away, as it WILL disappear today.

PAIRING IDEAS: Cheesesteak subs. Mexican markets are the place to go for your thin-sliced ribeye or round, whatever cut you like, and they’re usually already done. Warm up some buns, sear some onions, add the meat, fold in some provolone or cheddar, and optionally top, with real Giardiniera (if you can’t buy it, make it).

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Traveling Wilburys seem to set the mood for this pretty well. Check out on your favorite service (or use a CD like we still do!).

About the Producer

The AXR dream began with four friends sitting around a table sharing, dreaming, laughing, and occasionally sipping! The three founders: Kelly Trevethan, Mark Schratz and Don Van Laeken, as well as our consulting winemaker, Jean Hoefliger have created a clear vision that they are executing on. The history of the estate is compounded in layers; rooted in historic tales of fierce Native American hunting grounds, wild west pioneers and the first woman vintner of California in 1886. It has changed hands over the course of 134 years to become a brewery, restaurant, inn, winery and saloon. Tales of love, lust, heartbreak, murders and great fortune create an imaginative backdrop to our present-day vision of AXR.
