Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five Stags Leap District 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Jeb Dunnuck -
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is a gem of a wine that readers will love to have in their cellars. Sweet cassis, violets, and graphite define the bulk of the aromas, and it’s a classic Napa Valley Cabernet on the palate with its full-bodied richness, velvety tannins, and opulent yet balanced style. A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot, raised 20 months in new barrels, it’s going to keep for a solid two decades. There are 9,000 cases of this beauty made.
95 James Suckling -
Blackberries and blueberries with cherries, too. The palate is very polished and refined with fresh, velvety tannins that provide tension and verve. It’s long and vivid with polish and beauty. Drinkable now, but give it at least three or four years to soften. Better after 2026.
95 Wine Enthusiast -
A perennial powerhouse, this wine includes 12% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. Tight, tannic and brawny in style, it offers dense layers of rich earth, dried herb, soy and leather, with unmistakable muscularity that wraps itself around lushly dark, baked fruit.
93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it delivers bright, vibrant notes of cassis, cedar, Marmite toast and black raspberries with hints of bay leaves and tilled earth in the background. The palate is full-bodied, rich and plush, featuring a lively backbone and a long finish that displays wonderful purity and precision.
93 Vinous -
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is such an elegant wine. Bright, red-toned fruit and effusive aromatics lend striking brilliance to a Cabernet that is gracious and light on its feet. The 2019 stands out for its freshness and red fruit profile. It is beautifully done. One Point Five remains one of Napa Valley's little hidden gems; a wine that is seldom talked about in a discussion of the very top bottlings, but a Cabernet that never disappoints.

“One Point Five remains one of Napa Valley's little hidden gems; a wine that is seldom talked about in a discussion of the very top bottlings, but a Cabernet that never disappoints.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

id John Shafer know, back in 1972, that his cabernet would become one of the most collectible, critically-acclaimed Napa wines ever when he planted his vineyard in Stags Leap? We have a TINY allocation (at nice pricing) of the excellent One Point Five bottling (less than half the price of Hillside, and preeeeetty close in quality!). You’ll WANT this to drink for a few years while your Hillside ages a few more, am I right?

- 83% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot, 3% malbec, 2% petit verdot

- Predominantly from two Stags Leap District sites — Shafer’s hillside estate vineyard and the “Borderline” vineyard located about two miles south of the winery

- 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels (Allier & Tronçais)

200% incredibly sexy and powerful and utterly captivating, too! We like winemaker Elias’ words: “2019 One Point Five fills your glass with a generous, opulent Cabernet Sauvignon offering aromas and flavors of bright black cherry, red currant, cranberry, lavender, allspice, and crushed herbs. All this lush, vivid fruit is seamlessly brought together with ripe, cashmere-like tannins that promise years of beauty ahead with careful cellaring.”

Be sure to check out the critic’s notes on this...this is one of those times where their praise seems to go even above and beyond the already fantastic scores! But, fair warning, just a handful of cases...and another fantastic, over-delivering Napa classic from your Napa buds at First Bottle! First come, first served, good people!

PAIRING IDEAS: Go with a killer cheese/meat plate. We recommend Iberico ham – get the best. And the cheese — Comte, if you can find it, is amazing. Or do as the Bordelais do and try a ripe, creamy Brie type that you can eat with a spoon.

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: We’ve been listening to some old Smithereens - we’d recommend “Only a Memory”, “House We Used To Live In”, and “Sorry” to start!

About the Producer

John Shafer uprooted his family from Chicago in 1972, and bought 209 acres in what would later become Stag's Leap District. He quickly planted a small parcel of Cabernet in the hillsides above the winery at the advice of Nathan Fay and created his first wine from that planting in 1978, a precursor to their legendary Hillside Select. John's son Doug joined the family biz in 1983 and has helped shepherd the winery into the international limelight.
