Luigi Pira Barolo Vignarionda 2017
Nebbiolo | Italy
JS96, JD95, WA94
$89.95 - 750mL
Vignariodnda is one of Serralunga's most prized vineyards. It is packed with active limestone, in fact, it is the highest concentration of active limestone in all of Barolo! The soils are grey marl and sandstone that are rich in microelements which give these wines their staggering complexity. This also gives the wine its beautiful acid and intense, well-integrated tannins. In warm vintages like 2017, sites like this are able to temper the ripeness and create wines that will age for decades. This wine is massively structured but also ripe and appealing young. It is a wine that when enjoyed young, should be decanted for several hours or cellared for at least 5 years. A stellar showing from one of our favorite producers.

About The Producer
In the 1950s Luigi Pira decided to focus on grapes and wine, and in the following decades, he sold grapes and open wine to the biggest wineries in the area of Alba, which sought after high quality products from Serralunga d'Alba. It was a first step towards its own production. In the early 90s, Gianpaolo, Luigi's son, started to take part in the winery management, and the wine quality became the key factor. Today, Gianpaolo is flanked by his brothers Romolo and Claudio. Vignarionda is considered a grand cru vineyard of Serralunga d'Alba.

James Suckling
Fresh and sweet berry aromas with cherries and dark strawberries to the flowers and spices. It's full-bodied with layers of fine tannins and intense fruit. The wood comes out a little now, but it's so impressive nonetheless. Great vineyard. One for the cellar. Try after 2026.
