Bernard Baudry Chinon Clos Guillot 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

95-97 Vinous -
Just outside the village, Clos Guillot sits on a slope on clay over limestone. The 2019 Chinon is a serious barrel sample that melts in your mouth with its silken texture. No crushing, very little remontage and a year in used barrels all lend a very gentle touch. The tannins build gradually, coating the mouth with the finest of chalky textures. Excellent acidity keeps things fresh through the finish.
93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2018 Chinon Le Clos Guillot is another impressive Cabernet Franc from Bernard Baudry. The bouquet reveals a perfectly ripe, refined and elegant yet also intense dark fruit aroma reminiscent of blackberries and cherries intermixed with leather and some distinctive flinty aromas. Quite open from this bottle but highly attractive. Silky, round and with remarkable finesse and tension, this is a full-bodied, concentrated and quite tannic Chinon with a still astringent finish but with enough sweetness and intensity for good aging potential. The aftertaste is long and compact and once more represents the concentrated character of the berries when harvested. An impressive wine whose future is even more great than its current status. Tasted in June 2021.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

Wow! We drank a bottle of this with a burger at Mustard's the other day and we were blown away. Long gone are the days of weedy and green Chinon!

This is massively concentrated, almost black in the glass and bursting with fruit intensity. The glorious acidity and flinty minerality still kick hard throughout the experience, but this is notably fruit forward. This is by no means a monolithic wine because just as the front-loaded fruit hits, the minerality and salivating acidity walk you through to the big tannic finally that pops off like fireworks in your mouth. This is one that may be hard to resist early on, but the real greatness in this bottle needs at least 5 years in a cool cellar to be fully unleashed.

About the Producer

Bernard Baudry is undeniably one of Chinon's most distinguished producers. After completing his viticulture studies in beaune, Bernard returned to the Loire Valley and purchased his first two hectares of land in 1975. His son Matthieu has since joined his father in the cellar after studying in Macon and then in Bordeaux. The domaine now has 32 hectares of vineayrds spread across the AOC Chinon. 90% of their production is Cabernet Franc but they do have a small production of Chenin Blanc (10%). The reds are structured and firm but also show a side that is mineral and chalky exquisitness. The Clos Guillot parcel is made up of yellow limestone which is a younger version of white limestone.
