Domaine Charles Joguet Chinon Clos du Chene Vert Monopole 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 Robert Parker Wine's Advocate -
From one of the oldest crus of the whole appellation, the 2017 Chinon Clos du Chêne Vert comes from a vineyard located in the city itself, so on the right bank of the Vienne River. The very steep two-hectare slope is southwest-facing and on clay and siliceous-calcareous soils and yielded 30 hectoliters per hectare in 2017. Fermented in wooden vats and aged in one- to three-year-old barrels, this Cabernet Franc opens with a remarkably deep and fine yet intense, elegant and seamless bouquet of dark berries, raw meat, blood and crushed stones, yet all of this is not in an animal way but noble and inviting. The wine is pure and fresh, with a nervy-mineral drive under the silky-refined and elegant texture, and it reveals an intense, licoricey, well-balanced and even charming, long, vital and iodine-laced finish with intense ripe fruits and silky tannins. This is an impressive wine. Although the 2017 already tastes terrific, it can be cellared for 20 or more years. This is an icon wine of the appellation, and if there hadn’t been a pandemic, I would immediately have asked for a vertical. Tasted in June 2021.

Clos du Chêne Vert is one of Chinon's most legendary sites, located within the town itself, on steep tuffeau slopes on the right bank of the Vienne. Surprisingly fruity nose, with notes of kirsch, currant, and plum. On the palate, it's complex, deep, and dark. At first this is very tight, but as it opens it's delicate, elegant with soft, silky tannins. This probably needs a couple of years, but the potential is stunning.

About the Producer

Charles Joguet, a painter and sculptor by trade, abanodned his art career to begin a new profession at his family domain in 1957. Charles was a pioneer in the Loire Valley for single vineyard bottling and put Chinon on the map. Kermit Lynch discovered him in the 1970's and the rest is history. Today, Kevin Fontaine oversees the vineyards and cellar. He and his team cultivate thrity-six hectares of Cabernet Franc. The domaine bottles nine different cuvees, each one has its own unique story and terroir. Cuvee de Clos du Chene Vert is named for a monumental green oak tree that hangs over the parrcel which is a replanting of another 800 year old oak tree that was planted by the Abbey of Bourgueil in the 12th century. This is one of the oldest lieux dits in the AOC with 35 yr old vines, siliceous chalk and clay soils, and the most ageworthy of the cuvees.
