Mayacamas Merlot Napa Valley 2014 - First Bottle

Reviews

92 Vinous -
The 2014 Merlot is bright, punchy and vibrant in the glass. The purity of the flavors is striking, but the wine needs quite a bit of time to come together. That won't be an issue, as the wine probably won't be released until spring 2018. Picking on the early side, along with mountain tannins contribute to the wine's overall feel. The 2014 is going to be a fascinating wine to follow and could turn out to be one of the surprises of the vintage.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
Mayacamas has gone from strength to strength of late with the hiring of Phil Couttori and Andy Erickson. Look, you guys know all about the rich legacy of the legendary Mayacamas on Mount Veeder. Over the decades, I?ve been fortunate to drink and sell many wines dating back to the late 60s. The Mayacamas wines are singular, unique, long-haul wines of amazing character and depth. Andy Erickson took over winemaking (the 2014 would have been his first soup to nuts vintage), and while upgrading the facilities a bit and tweaking a few things, we can confidently say that they are better than ever. AND --- IMPORTANTLY, I?d like to add that they are truly OUTSTANDING VALUES in relative terms these days...you can easily spend $200-$300 on an Andy-made wine with lesser ratings, lesser pedigree and track record than this much-loved winery.

About the Producer

Grapes have grown continuously on the Mayacamas property since the late 19th century, at elevations of up to 2400 feet above the Valley floor. For almost 130 years, generations of vintners have worked the soils of the estate?s rugged mountaintop vineyards for tiny yields of intensely flavored mountain grapes. Now under new ownership with a superstar team of grower Phil Coturri and winemaker Andy Erickson, this historic property has ushered in a new era.
