Pelassa Barolo 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Here's a wine that shows the dark berry fruit, smoke, tar and licorice of a classic Nebbiolo. The Pelassa 2016 Barolo reveals tart cherry and dried blackberry, with delicate background tones of smoke, tar and powdered licorice. There are touches of rusty nail and candied lilac as well. This is a steady and nicely balanced Barolo that has just started its bottle evolution, and that should continue well beyond the 10-year mark.
93 James Suckling -
Sweet berries and strawberries with notes of smoke and slate. It’s medium-to full-bodied with chewy, creamy tannins. Needs time to soften, but impressive. Try after 2023.

Pelassa is a rising star based in Montà d’Alba in Piedmont, but with rockstar holdings in one of the most talked-about Nebbiolo-hipster subzones in Barolo -- Verduno!! The game-changing, planet-shaking, once-in-a-generation 2016 vintage is on full display here in a wine to embrace, covet, hold tightly and savor...Pelassa! No one has to know you paid less than the rest of the world for it.

This small family estate was founded in the 1950s by Mario Pelassa. At the age of 10, he took the advice to get ‘on yer bike’ to help the family fortunes, cycling into Turin with a few flasks of Nebbiolo to sell. From these humble origins the winery was established, and today, produces high-quality bottlings from estate vineyards, with reality-based prices that we can ALL appreciate…! Especially today from this world-class vintage at this crazy price!

Give this a rest when it arrives, and decant it if you choose to open it soon. Should easily go 10-20 years, however! While it lasts!

PAIRING IDEAS: Did you know you can buy a pork shoulder, slice it thick like a steak, and grill or braise it? You don’t always have to slow roast it for 8+ hours, nope! Here’s a great recipe for just that, if you like – good cheese and bread are always welcome, too!

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: How about the soundtrack to “Big Night”? A foodie CLASSIC, hilarious and super-fun movie.
