Markus Molitor Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese White Capsule 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2018 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Spätlese (White Capsule) is pure, fresh and flinty on the clear and crunchy, very elegant and complex nose. Pure and almost astringent on the salty palate, this is a piquant, very nervous and persistently salty Riesling with great tension, vitality and finesse. A great and promising Würzgarten. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.
94 James Suckling -
Stand back for the arrival of this Mosel riesling express! Very spicy with dried-strawberry, dried-cranberry and cumin notes, this is a very distinctive, almost dry white. Serious concentration (old vines?) and nice creaminess, then comes a wave of spice at the imposing finish. Drink or hold.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

If you know, you know... Molitor is a rockstar, whose wines are brilliant, minerally, pure expressions that we call “epiphany-level”. Their acidity, stoniness and constellations of fruit are mind-boggling, and they are so fun to drink and KEEP drinking. Lower acidity, amazing freshness, a balanced kiss of sweetness, you will not be able to put the glass down! Our price today is superb – we highly recommend grabbing a few of these for near or long-term drinking!

Markus Molitor is only 40, but he has been running his family estate for 20 years now. During this period, he has increased the vineyard area to 40 ha, with holdings in some of the best vineyards in middle Mosel, and one in the Saar. His approach is terroir focused, and he only uses natural yeasts. Wines are matured in a mix of stainless steel and large (neutral) oak barrels. The Ürziger Würzgarten site is traditionally considered to be a specialty among the Middle Mosel vineyards because of its red iron-rich soil, which is mixed with fine slate. This gives the wines grown here a totally different character, with spice and opulent fruit, as well as a crisp, hearty backbone, which produces a tremendously full-bodied wine when combined with a hint of residual sugar.

Only 20 cases! First come, first served, collectors and cognoscenti!

PAIRING IDEAS: A clean, pure, zesty, palate-sparking rice noodle salad, with lime, fish sauce, and lemongrass is just what the doctor ordered. Here’s a recipe for you!

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: An epiphany wine with an epiphany song! So, it only makes sense to blast some Miley Cyrus “Wrecking Ball”.

About the Producer

In 1984, at the tender age of 20, Markus Molitor took over his father's winery with a clear aim: to produce Mosel Rieslings under the name "Molitor" in the tradition of eight generations and in the same quality that made the region world-famous 100 years ago. The wines are terroir-specific, unmistakable and extremely age able. One of our favorite Mosel producers here at First Bottle! Our plot covers 0.13 hectares in the legendary 3.2 hectare steep slope facing south-west. The location has a stony Devonian slate weathered soil with a high proportion of fine earth and good water retention capacity. The wines are crystal clear with an animating fruit, some of which has exotic nuances. A silky acid structure and the finest minerality from the slate complement the outstanding taste profile of this site.
