The NV Vin de France Arcane Le Fou is another unique wine from this incredible winemaker. This cuvée focuses on different clones of Grenache as well as just about every permitted variety out there (although it’s 85% Grenache). It has a big, sweet nose of blueberries, black cherries, lavender, and peppery incense as well as a full-bodied, layered, powerful yet seamless style on the palate. With no hard edges, silky tannins, and a big finish, it’s a singular wine (it’s mostly from vines in Châteauneuf Du Pape) to enjoy over the coming 10-15 years.

OK, now that we’ve gotten the urgency out of the way, let’s talk Arcane Le Fou! Wow, what a wine! Simply amazing what Xavier does, with all of the resources available to him as the Rhone’s super-consultant (many of you already know this and will long have been off to grab a few already), and he has blown us away once again.

This wine is SPECIAL. It’s a “Vin de France” because of its vintage and appellation blend. Xavier compares it to the blending done in Champagne, as it combines 5 vintages from 10 different villages around the Southern Rhone including Chateauneuf du Pape, Rasteau and Ventoux among others. At the end of the day, it’s really a dead-serious Grenache (85%) that delivers on all levels, a testament to Xavier's blending and sourcing prowess. That’s why this magnum price is so extraordinary! And...it SOARS. So plush and extracted, yet flowing and silky simultaneously. Tons of ripe fruit, seamless and peppered with sweet roasted herbs, anise and toasted spices, it boggles the mind that we can sell this 96-POINTER for this price!

PAIRING IDEAS: Cassoulet would really be the perfect thing here if you have the time to make it. Here’s a quick one you can do in a cast iron pan, or go for something more serious, like this one, which adds the next-level wonderfulness of duck confit.

About the Producer

Oenologist consultant for twenty years in Chateauneuf du Pape and Southern Rhone Valley, Xavier Vignon is considered one of the most prominent consultants in the region. Each vintage Xavier is the fruit of meticulous work and a rigorous selection. The diversity of the Rhone terroirs, combined with the freedom offered by small structure, allows him, vintage after vintage, to select the wines that will allow Xavier's blends to combine concentration, minerality, and nobility of the fruit.
