Radio-Coteau Syrah Dusty Lane Sonoma Coast 2013 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
I was blown away by the four Syrahs that Eric Sussman is producing. One of two prodigious Syrahs include the 2013 Syrah Dusty Lane. This comes from John Alban’s clonal selections, probably accessed from Chave or Chapoutier Hermitage vineyards in France. Utilizing 38% whole-clusters, bottled unfined and unfiltered, this is a killer Syrah. Opaque purple in color, with notes of steak tartare, blackberry, cassis, camphor and melted asphalt, this wine is full-bodied, super-majestic, multidimensional, and just a fabulous, rich, savory offering with moderate tannin. It will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring and drink well for 15-20 years. It’s a compelling Syrah from Eric Sussman.
95 Vinous -
The 2013 Syrah Dusty Lane presents a distinctly savory profile to match its intense, dark fruit. The inclusion of 38% whole clusters add considerable aromatic complexity, while beams of supporting tannin and acidity give the wine its sense of proportion. Dark cherry, plum, pomegranate, menthol, licorice, earthiness and black pepper are fused into the huge, enveloping finish. The tannins need a few years to settle down, but there is a lot to look forward to once that happens.

"Radio Coteau stands out in the Sonoma landscape for wines of exceptional purity, transparency and pedigree. I cannot recommend them highly enough. By any measure, Radio Coteau is world-class. It's as simple as that.” - Antonio Galloni

“I was blown away by the four Syrahs that Eric Sussman is producing.” - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Not for the shy! But definitely for the Syrah perfectionist! This wine is a blockbuster -- a rich, intense, dark, meaty and uber-complex wine with terrific depth and exceptional balance. It’s too easy to compare to a $200 Hermitage, but, well, we’re going to!! We love the nuances of fine herbs, with intense minerality and deep, dark, almost gothic fruits. This seems to be frozen in time, showing the regal quality of this amazing vintage. Eric Sussman is once again showing off his incredible winemaking prowess in a wine that will be a match made in heaven with some rosemary and garlic lamb loins, or check out this one-pot Osso Buco below!

Established in 2002 by the perfectionist himself, Eric Sussman, Radio-Coteau and was an instant sensation. That’s why we’re so thrilled to have some to offer with this kind of killer provenance...truly a rare occurrence! Read the notes below, but we highly recommend moving quick. As you might imagine, we have only a handful of cases to sell. First come, first served…!

PAIRING IDEAS: We made a super-easy, one-pot wonder this weekend that is perfect with this powerful Syrah -- Osso Buco! Sear off the meat, add veggies, wine, etc. Let it all cook down...mmm! Perfect for this weather, too. Here’s a recipe we used.

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Seems like ELO time for this feast. ELO is a bit of an underrated 70s band, we think -- check out some of the deep cuts, plus the classics.

About the Producer

Eric Sussman first heard the expression radio coteau from a friend while living and working in Burgundy. More than a preference for how you discover these wines, the name reflects a commitment to capturing reflections of soil, seasons, people and place. In 2002, Eric established Radio-Coteau, focusing on the north coast vineyards of western Sonoma County and Anderson Valley. With their benchland locations, well-drained soils, exposure by capricious marine air and fog, these sites host grapes naturally suited to their surrounding elements. This natural selection afforded Eric an opportunity to refine his Old World experiences while working with New World grapes. For more than a decade, he has strived to balance nature's expression with a delicate, but disciplined human touch in these handcrafted wines.
