Domaine Dumien Serrette Cornas Cuvee Henri Vieilles Vignes 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Wine Spectator -
Ripe, dark and a bit brooding still, with a well of warmed cassis and plum reduction liberally laced with dark olive, bay leaf, smoldering tobacco and singed alder notes. This has lots of savory-laced grip through the finish, with good underlying energy. Forget this one in the cellar for a while. Best from 2025 through 2038. From France.

Century-old vines, granitic soils, only 2 barrels made…true connoisseur-level Cornas! Not for the shy! Superbly ripe and concentrated, this is a hedonist's dream, so if you like light, wimpy wines, delete this email.

The Dumien name can be found mentioned in Cornas as far back as 1515. In 1925, before Cornas was recognized as an AOC in 1938, the family purchased the three and a half hectares of vineyards that constitute their current estate.

Over the years Gilbert's neighbor, Noël Verset, continually asked Gilbert why he didn't make a special bottling of only his oldest vineyards. Now that Nicolas is managing the domaine with him, they decided to give it a try and made just two barrels from "Patou" vineyards that are more than 100 years old. They named the cuvée after Gilbert's father, Henri.

We have exactly 72 bottles — don’t miss it!

PAIRING IDEAS: Plan out time for a serious dinner with a brilliant wine like this — rack of lamb. There’s a bit of feta and black olive here, which is a perfect companion to those meaty Syrah flavors.

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Pink Floyd – just go with "Greatest Hits", or if you’re feeling moody, just listen to "Dark Side of the Moon" back to back!

About the Producer

The Serrette family has deep roots in Cornas dating as far back as 1915. The domaine is relatively new in the region and are farming 3 ha of vines. During most of the 20th century they supplied their grapes to some very famous negociants like Delas, Chapoutier and Jaboulet. It was in 1983 when Gilbert Serrette and the family decided to bottle their own wine. The domaine is under the charge of Nicolas Serrette who follows traditional Rhone winemaking methods like foot treading and hand harvesting. Cuveen Patou is a single vineyard cru from a small Lieu-Dit. The vines planted here are estimated to be 80 years of age. The vineyard is extremely low yielding and the soil structure is made up of decomposed granite and sand-lending it the pure, rustic flavor of Cornas.
