Clos de Luz Azuda Syrah Rapel Valley 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 Descorchados -
The garnacha version of Azuda and this syrah both come from hillsides rich in granite, but while this soil casuses tense texture and wild tannins in the garnacha, here it's projected as a polished texture that's very friendly on the palate and not very reactive with saliva. The rest is juicy fruit that moves throughout the mouth, causing a delicious sensation of drinkability. A balckberry juice that's at its best today, despite its youth.
91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2019 Azuda Syrah is heady and ripe, juicy and lush, reflecting a warmer and dry year. It's balsamic and spicy and has a full body and abundant tannins. A powerful Syrah. 20,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020.
91 Vinous -
The 2019 Syrah Azuda comes from a vineyard planted in granite soils and is mixed with 2% Carménère; all of it is barrel-aged. Purple in color, it delivers animal aromas with raisin and bacon over candied raspberry. The loose, flavorful palate has a mild intensity, low freshness and an exaggerated complexion. A ripe, indulgent, sun-kissed wine.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

We’ll keep this short and sweet because we only have 25 cases, and the staff is snapping it up! We kid you not. Syrah, from Almahue Valley (Chile) from own-rooted, phylloxera-free vines 40 miles from the ocean. Rich, soaringly aromatic, beautifully polished and wonderfully easy to drink, with a fantastic spicy/savory note and a Cote Rotie like minerality. Terrifically drinkable, forward, yet serious and light on its feet. It is crowd-pleasing yet complex (plus, when’s the last time you had a killer Syrah from Chile?). Seriously, load up at under $20!/p>

Clos de Luz is a family winery, originally planted in 1945, practicing organic, certified sustainable and vegan friendly, and we LOVE what they’re doing! Try it for yourself!

PAIRING IDEAS: Make a sandwich. Make THIS sandwich, roast pork with broccolini (don’t be shy with the red pepper flakes, either). Recently discovered via a Goldbelly order, this is a Philly classic that is crazy-delicious, easy to do, and terrific with a bottle of gutsy, showy, quaffable Syrah!

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Dandy Warhols! Portland’s dandies are always a fun listen - start out with “Bohemian Like You” and keep going.

About the Producer

Clos de Luz is a family winery located in Almahue Valley, known as the birthplace of Carmenere in Chile. The estate spreads over 33 hectares of vineyards, planted in 1945 by Gabriel’s grandmother, Luz. They are some of the oldest Carmenere vineyards in Chile, and probably in the world. Everything is own rooted as phylloxera never reached this side of the Andes. Almahue is about 40 miles from the ocean and about 28 miles from the base of the Andes in a beautiful small valley and part of the larger appellation Rapel Valley. Farming is practicing organic, certified sustainable and vegan friendly.
