Joseph Roty Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys Vieilles Vignes is lovely, bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries, licorice and spices, framed by a deft touch of toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, supple and layered, with a charming core of fruit, powdery tannins and fine depth at the core. As ever, this derives from old vines below Charmes-Chambertin and shares some of that cru's attributes.
92 Vinous -
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys, from vines adjacent to Charmes-Chambertin, is well-defined on the nose, offering blackberry, bilberry, touches of meat juice and light savory notes. The medium-bodied palate is fresh and vibrant, with fine grip on the entry and an almost symmetrical poise on the graphite finish. Excellent.

Domaine Joseph Roty's wines are always highly sought-after when they land in the states. We scored a tiny parcel (just 3 cases) of his brilliant Gevrey Champs-Chenys. These are hyper polished wines with a modern tinge to them but they require some time in the cellar to show their true potential.

About the Producer

Domaine Joseph Roty is remarked to have one of the largest concentrations of old vines in Burgundy averging 65 years. These wines are structured coupled with remarkable complexity due to the old vines, low yields and late harvest picking. The domaine was started in the late 1960's by Joseph who has since passed and now the domaine is ran by his widow, Roty and their sons Philippe and Pierre Jean. "These are not fashion-conscious wines, everything is destemmed, new oak is relatively high, around 50% on the village wines, 60-70% on the Lieux-Dit and 100% on the Grand Cru. They are wines made to age, there is little point opening them young."
