Le Clos du Caillou Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Quartz 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

96-99 Jeb Dunnuck -
The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz also looks to be a step up over the 2018, with rockstar levels of blackberry and kirsch fruits interwoven with lots of garrigue, sappy flowers, and melted licorice. This big, opulent, super-plush, and sexy 2019 is flawlessly balanced, has great tannins, and a monster of a finish. Count me impressed. Is this even better than the 2016?
94-97 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Black cherries and dark chocolate swirl together on the nose of the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz, which somehow manages to retain a mouthwatering sense of freshness on the finish despite the massive ripeness. Full-bodied, richly velvety in feel and expansive in the mouth, this is an impressive effort that's sure to please when young.
96 Decanter -
Deep liquorice and tarragon freshness here, this has a voluptuous texture, very rounded and generous. Ends firms and powerful, it's a wine with plenty of presence and has squished blackberry fruits into the long length. Very well balanced for a powerful wine. Grown half on large pebbles, half on sand in lieu-dit Les Cassanets, destemmed, then fermented mostly in concrete, then matured mostly in demi-muid except for 10% in amphora.

Organic. Biodynamic. VERY old-vines, and very little made. A cellar treasure to gaze at for a few years before popping it, and reveling in the sheer intensity and layered complexity!!

Clos du Caillou continues to be red hot in the fine and rare wine market --- picking these up on release is ALWAYS advised. You can read the mouth-watering reviews below, but whatever amount of bottles you decide on...do it quick! We got a measly allocation of the excellent 2019 Quartz (but hey, we’re not complaining), and it is one of the best Quartz ever made. We got to try a bottle and...POOF was the sound of our brains exploding as we dove in. So incredibly intense and long, but with almost impossible freshness to go along with the oodles of fruit -- truly astounding juice. 96-99 points! And deserving every one!

PAIRING IDEAS: With big, plush CdP, we love to go big and savory to match the ripe flavors, savory hints, and herbal nuances found in both.

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: We are going to have to go with something fun and serious at the same time for this. Weather Report's “Birdland” with Jaco Pastorius’ absolutely mind-blowing bass work. One of the all-time great jazz fusion bands with THE best bass player.

About the Producer

The Clos du Caillou was founded in 1895 when Elie Dussaud settled there and created an old cellar. It started as a hunting preserve and this history ironically led to its exclusion from the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation upon its creation in the 1930's. IN 1996, Sylvie Vacheron and her husband, Jean-Denis Vacheron, decided to leave Sancerre terroirs for a huge challenge : take over the vineyard Le Clos du Caillou and produce great wines. Jean-Denis has very high ambition for the vineyard. He is determined to produce wines that suits him, free of any diktat. He like the finesse, the elegance, the Burgundy style.
